SSD queries

Hey all,

I`m getting that upgrade itch atm for my pc.

I`ve decided I`m gonna get a new graphics card and set 200 aside for that but I`m looking at making the jump to SSD especially after hearing about the speed of loading from a work friend.

Now I`m looking at the 64GB Crucial RealSSD C300 fist off is this the best for price/size atm and second would getting 2 and raiding them offer a huge speed increase agaain?

the 60GB sandforce drives are cost the same and I believe they are better.

As for raiding them, I like them a lot, but be prepared it'll be a bit awkward to use computers with normal HDDs after using even a single SSD

all have their pros and cons but id say if you could then wait... im led to believe there are intel and c400 (the next version of the crucial c300s) are due for release this month so probably hit retail next month(i hope as im waiting too lol).

If you have to choose then id put my money on the real c300, great read speeds and the write speed is acceptable, they have good reliability and the speeds are solid which make it great for an OS drive. With the fiasco of OCZ new move to 25nm drives im a bit worried about getting on of their drives at the minute, if you want to splash out a bit more id say you should get a 128gb c300(even faster writes!) or the newish corsair ssd's, they moved to micron controller iirc with fairly improved write speeds compared to the c300, about 110 i believe.

If you wait a bit longer the newer Sandforce drives will also be out, they were benchmarked at 500MBs on anandtech, it depends how long you can wait.

Bear in mind that these new drives and the existing C300 require a SATA 6Gb/s port, so would need a PCI adaptor if using the X48 board.

If you wait a bit longer the newer Sandforce drives will also be out, they were benchmarked at 500MBs on anandtech, it depends how long you can wait.

Bear in mind that these new drives and the existing C300 require a SATA 6Gb/s port, so would need a PCI adaptor if using the X48 board.

The C300 will work happily on SATA 2 with only a little performance reduction. Somebody here said their C300 was slower on a SATA 3 PCI card, So it seems they can be fussy about the make of interface chips they are connected to.

But by limiting it to 290ish mb/s, you may as well get a Sandforce and have the superior IOPS and write speed.

I`m looking at the 64GB Crucial RealSSD C300

I ran it for a few months, while the intial speed is great, the drive was plauged with freezing/lag problems, it was most noticeable for me browsing. It seems a well know issue on their own forums

Just a thought on this: the x1 PCI-e v2 has a bandwidth of about 500MB/s, so if you put 2 on there in RAID you would be losing about 150-200MB/s of potential performance. Accordingly, if you only want it for the SATAIII, get the non-RAID version and save £10 (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/highp...ontroller-card). However, stepping up to a x4 card costs about £95.

I did! If I was looking for an SSD now I'd wait a while until the newer ones come out.

Yup.

Not sure how true it is, but I understand that there are potential longevity issues with the new 25nm
SSDs. (Mind you let's face it most of us upgrade every 2-3 years anyway!?)
But I would also question how much improvement there would be in "day to day real world" computing.
