Unhappy Thecus 4100+ Dropping Video Frames

I'm running a 4100+ with 3 X 750 Gb WD hard drives in a Raid 5. The NAS is dropping frames when trying to stream video. Here are the benchmarks:

    PassMark(TM) PerformanceTest 6.1
Results generated on: Thursday, September 04, 2008

    Benchmark Results

    Test Name: This Computer
    Disk - Sequential Read: 8.8 MBytes/Sec
    Disk - Sequential Write: 4.1 MBytes/Sec
    Disk - Random Seek + RW: 5.3 MBytes/Sec
    Disk Mark: 66.0
    PassMark Rating: 13.2

Will it help adding a fourth disk or will that only make matters worse? Is there anything that can be done to speed up the 4100+?

    Sincerely,

    Tracy

Re: Thecus 4100+ Dropping Video Frames

    Dear Sir,

If playback the video from N4100+ and frames dropping, follwoing suggestion for your reference:
    1. Verify the video file bandwidth, if your network environment allow up to 8.8 MBytes/Sec, please confirm the andwidth of video file won't over this value.
    2. Confirm without any addition laoding sharing the performance of N4100+, as like downlaod mamager, media server or other clients accessing in the smae time.
    3. Play this file on PC locally veify it is file issue or not.

Re: Thecus 4100+ Dropping Video Frames

    Hi Yvon,

Thanks for your reply. Here are my responses to your feedback:

    1) I'm running gigabit ethernet, so the network should be able to handle video file playback.

    2) I confirmed that there is nothing else putting a load on the NAS. I am not running FTP, DLNA, Print Server, etc.

    3) I copied the video file to the PC's local hard drive and there are no frames or audio being dropped.

Can you address the questions that I raised at the end of my prior email (see below)?

Will it help adding a fourth disk or will that only make matters worse?
Is there anything that can be done to speed up the 4100+?
What is the expected transfer rate using the system I described in my first email?

    Sincerely,

    Tracy

Re: Thecus 4100+ Dropping Video Frames

I'm using VLC Media Player version 0.8.6i (videolan.org). Where do you want me to send the file too? I'll probably have to only send you a portion of it because it is about 7 gb.

    Dear Sir,

If possible please provide a small sample file for us reference.
Or while playback the video from Windows with using VLC Media Player, please open the Windows Task Manager (right click on Task Bar and choose Task Manager) and check the bandwidth from Networking item.

The network utilization is less than 1%. Speed is shown as 1 Gbps.
