    (noisy) n7700 fans

My 7 hard drives in my Thecus spin up and make noise, fine... but the fans in this N700 are NOISY>. really noisy

What sizes are they..? case fan, and power supply fan and anything else?
Id like to replace or modify or etc.. do anything to make this box quieter.. its VERY loud.

Has anyone tried replacing fans on a Thecus box, or anything?

These are good 80mm fans id like to try

    NOCTUA NF-R8

    http://www.xoxide.com/noctua-nf-r8-f...D=142303902522

They can be ordered with gaskets, mounts, etc.. to reduce more vibration.
Has anyone tried gaskets, mounts, etc to get quieter numbers/dB?

    Thanks
    Phillip

    Re: (noisy) n7700 fans

My N7700 is in my basement.

I went down there today and yes, they are VERY NOISY.

I have a vibration hum too, but am afraid to open the box and break it since it is in my basement, away from us anyway.

I thought their fans were power/heat/speed controlled?

    Dear Sir,

The N7700 DC FAN have RPM control, while DC fan make noise please provide the CONF.BIN to http://esupport.thecus.com for us analysis it is temperature issue or not, we could download CONF.BIN from SYSTEM->CONFIG MGMT->DOWNLOAD->CONF.BIN

Back panel DC FAN ADDA AD0912MX-A76GL 12V 0.17A
Power supply DC FAN ADDA AD0412HB-C5 12V 0.10A

    Re: (noisy) n7700 fans

I have replaced both case fans with a Noctua NF-B9 (92x92x25).
Extremely easy to do (undo the 4 back screws, the back panel comes off, unscrew the original fans, disconnect the fans, use the plastic silent blocks that come with the Noctuas to mount them, connect the noctuas, replace back panel). Total time 10mn max, N7700 COMPLETELY SILENT! Total cost around £30 including VAT an shipping.
I didn't use the optional silencers as they were not necessary andI wanted to keep the best possible ventilation. HIGHLY recommended.

Not necessary to replace the Power supply fan, I can't hear the N7700 anymore (it's under my desk, and I couldn't concentrate before I replaced the fans). I didn't try the screws, I put the silent blocks direct as in my experience they are really good to isolate vibrations and make silent fans even more silent. Really, it's a no brainer, buy two of these, and you will actually wonder if your N7700 is on or not.

I'm waiting for my drives (only one 250gb for test in the n7700), so I have no idea what it will be with the WD 20EADS that I plan to use, but based on the 5 WD1000YPS I have in my N5200, they are pretty much silent as well.

I think I'm going to replace the silent fan I had put in my n5200 by a Noctua. Not even close!

Let me know how you go. The best deal I found was at QuietPC.com. Very good price, and I received them this morning (saturday), ordered friday, with the cheapest shipping (1st class).

Yes, no need for the ULNA, highest RPM. I just switched my n5200 off to check, I can barely hear the n7700, it makes less noise than my laptop!

    Re: (noisy) n7700 fans

amazing amazing... best $30 i ever spent ever

the difference in noise is staggering
probably 15db drop.. which makes the difference from NOISY to barely audible
perfect.. thank you Manni for urging us to do this mod.. HUGE Difference

i have two n7700 on my desk.. one has the noctua x2 92mm fans (no unla) and the other stock
one is like a jet engine, and the other a barely audible wooshing sound

for people using these in media rooms/living room theaters.. i might also recommend replacing the power supply 40mm or the cpu fan.. what do you think manni? to make it super quiet

just curious - how many disks do you have in your n7700 and what temperatures do they report in the SMART status display after swapping the fans?

Glad it worked for you as well as it did for me.
I do use my N7700 and N5200 in a home theatre, but since the mod the n7700 doesn't make more noise than my (quitesilent) PJ or my HTPC, so I'm happy like this. I would be concerned about voiding the warranty when replacing the 40mm, as I'm not sure it's a quick connect like for the main fans.

Let us know if you try it!

Still waiting for my disks (7 WD20EADS), so at the moment I only have a 250G / 7200 rpm seagate for testing purposes in the n7700. It's the same temp as before the swap (44c), seagate drives always run a bit hot. I expect the GPs to run much cooler. I'll report when they are in.

In the n5200, I have 5x1TB (RE2), I have replaced the stock fan ages ago with an acoustifan (not as good as the noctuas, but still much less noisy than stock) and they run at 36-38c under full load.

I'm thinking of putting a Noctua in there as well.
