    4GB still seems like overkill unless you're a massive multi-tasker, but 8GB

You are sayin that but the internal info is that whatever demos microsoft is doing for VISTA demonstrations, where it is looking so cool and fast, they are using 4GB of RAM at the minimum, and to be honest VISTA does work quiet fast with 4GB of RAM or more as compared to 2GB because of vista's superfetch feature taking considerable advantage of additional ram present in the system.
So any additional ram is always better and that stands true for even XP based systems but it also depends a lot on your working habits and, type and amount of applications you are working with.
So on the basis of all this, you should decide how much ram you require and if you would buy any more, would it be of any help considering the above mentioned points.

Using x64 Vista it's easy to fill 2GB, even playing older games like BF2. 4GB RAM is my next upgrade.

Absolutely, on XP 32bit, its a total waste of your money if you would go with anything more than 3GB, but as i quoted before, on any 64bit based OS you would definately experience advantages of 4GB or more ram, especially in case of VISTA, however again as i said before, it depends on other things as well (plz see my earlier post).

yeah as much as YYT are around to make money they do ensure that they make their money via offering honest and realistic advice as oppose to profit-based advice like every other store (esp on the tottenham court rd!)

I'm sorry mate but that is neither honest nor realistic

Although his last post in which he corrected that statement was honest, and it's good to see the staff here encouraging debate. A well appreciated attitude to customer service

Can you trade in brand new ram that you have brought from another retailer?

If you bought it over the web - and the packaging is unbroken (can be made to look unbroken - depends on your morals )...

...then the Distance Selling Regulations mean you can return it immediately for a refund automatically

YOU CANNOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE USED IT - the web store would need to get it back 'as new' - ready to sell to someone else

The comment by Nav still stands true though - he didn't specifically say 4gb was beneficial under XP, he said more memory is beneficial. So for those running XP with 256mb (I don't know how) 512mb is going to be an improvement, and so on up to 2gb.
