    Building a Gaming PC

I have got an MSI GX700 Extreme (a gaming laptop), it is OK for games, but I need something more powerful. I know that if you want to buy a pre-built gaming PC, shops charge rediculous prices, so I am wanting to build a PC myself. I have had no experience with building PCs from scratch so I need some help.

    Part Price YOYO Code
    Case £48.69 1081
    Mother B £126.82 73300
    CPU £190.64 42040
    RAM £133.77 26035
    HD1 £25.33 4350
    HD2 £55.58 4605
    Graphic C £286.65 39129
    DVD-RW £21.84 33811
    Network C £14.86 951
    Sound C £28.10 18176
    Speakers £52.17 24556
    Keyboard £38.11 98341
    Mouse £31.55 9646

I tried to post links to all the parts but I don't have 5 posts. Overall, that turns out to be £1073.31 (including the mouse mat which isn't above) if you were wondering. I need to know if things like the processor, and RAM, graphics card ect. would be compatible with the motherboard. Also, is there anything I have forgotten?

    Thanks.

There does not seem to be a power supply unit.

HuNt3r92 could you write what each part is, codes are o.k but have to keep looking them up.

    Re: Building a Gaming PC

O.K firstly I am not a fan of Maxtor hard drives and as a gamer you need speed.
So instead of two hard drives I would opt for the Spinpoint 750GB
    YOYOtech

Thats £20 more but please read this review. The 1TB if you can afford it

    Toms Review

Notice you are getting the E8500 Dual Core, great for present day gaming.
Quads are about the same price.
New Penryns are available in days, rumors that the Q6600 and Q6700 will drop in price after the 2nd April. Tad longer as the drop filters through to the retailer.

So why Quad, I believe that more games will use the the 4 cores available , true not at this moment but long term. Obviously you could sell the E8500 and upgrade later.
    Just something to think about.

Netgear PCI Gigabit LAN Network Card - £14.86

You do not need that as the motherboard has two (RJ45 ) Lan ports already

    I'll definately consider a quad.
Will all of those parts would work with the motherboard?
Would that motherboard fit inside the case?
What power supply would I want to get?

    Yes.....
But the graphic card is mighty long almost 10.5 inches this maybe a problem. I have never used that case so cannot comment. It maybe that a slight mod is needed to fit it.

Please can somebody confirm the graphic card will fit or not.

Yes, ATX is a standard that cases and motherboards adhere to (mostly)

Personally I would go for a Corsair TX 750W... you may get away with a Corsair 650 but I would not risk it.

    Re: Building a Gaming PC

One more thing that I forgot to ask. The main problem with my laptop is that I can cook my dinner on it. Is there anything I could get when building my new PC that could help keep it cool, as I don't want the same problem again.

    Re: Building a Gaming PC

There is a whole industry dedicated to this.

    First consideration is the case.

When you build make sure all wires are neat and tidy as these obstruct air flow.

The case you intend to buy will need a 120 mm exhaust fan at the rear.

These are fairly cheap so buy a good quality one. The ones I normally use are not on YOYO listings so would be wrong for me to name them on their boards. Do some research around the forums and the same names will come up again and again.

There is normally a payoff between silence and performance. The faster the fan rpm the louder it is, but shifts more air. Air moved measured in CFM and noise Db.

You may well want a pci fan for you card installed under it. There are VGA coolers on the market, not sure if there is one for your card yet. But with these you have to take off the present card coolers so invalidate your guarantee.

If you do not over clock the GPU and install a rear fan, neat and tidy cabling I think you will be o.k.

I see you are after some bling

O.K generally speaking bling type of fans do not extract as much air. This fan seems to be o.k but a disturbing factor is nowhere on the net, and that includes Zalmans own website could I find the CFM.

Your graphic card is going to generate a lot of heat, this needs to be extracted.

Alex you need to decide if Silence, Performance or Bling is the key factor.

Do some research on this one

Why would you go for the 750W?
Also, why would you think the 650w wouldnt be enough?

A good 500W unit would be MORE than enough to run this rig so why you think 750W is required god only knows.

I realise you are only trying to help you are WAY wide of the mark with your recommendations..

NOTE: I see you cherry pick your information from Toms Hardware.
Thats the last place you should look for an unbiased opinion.

    I personally wouldnt get that.
The power rating of that unit vs the true amperage/wattage just doesnt add up so i would steer clear.

This is pretty good for the price though. YOYOtech
    or this
    YOYOtech

Unfortunately (and i hope the powers that be at Yoyotech are reding this), the Power Supplies on offer at Yoyotech are not very good.

There should be alot more to cose from here. Lose the EZ-Cools (just awful) and the Coolermasters (average at best) and get some Enermax and a better range of Corsairs on the site.
