Best places to look for a job within IT?

Well my degree is finished so I thought I would start the job hunting process.

Looking for a software development/testing position, not hugely fussed where it is within, although I am liking the idea of the investment banking area from suggestions from other people.

Main question is? Where to look?

I have signed up and been using an IT oriented recruitment company and a grad oriented one (Real Resourcing and Gradcracker) but there are so many (and the grad positions are not what I am looking for as it's engineering oriented) and I don't know who is best to look at getting a job through etc.

    Thanks

Currently working for my 3rd Investment Bank and from what I can tell it depends if you are going for the more "graduate position", or "experienced professional" If its the former then this may be a useful link... http://www.wikijob.co.uk/forum/inves...ncial-services basically a forum where grads discuss the ongoing recruitment process's at each organisation, the interviews, opinions etc. Is quite a eye opener for non grads like me

If you want to approach from the "experienced professional" angle then i have always used www.jobserve.com - although my current job i got was by being approached directly through www.linkedin.com which you may find useful as your career progresses.

All the best with the job hunting!

I used www.jobserve.com too, got a few interviews and my first job through there, although the job I got was through Monarch Recruitment who found me through jobserver I think

The one I've just applied for was advertised in the Metro, of all places...

edit: I guess what I'm saying there is don't rule out anywhere as a possible source for jobs

We're hiring all sorts of Devs. PM me for details.
Downside - it's going to be in London, so you'd have to move, which may or may not be worth it.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Re: Best places to look for a job within IT?

I found the best way was to list myself on a few of the big CV websites, with a very detailed online profile and good CV. This itself never got me a job, but it did mean I was getting 10-20 recruiters phoning me on a daily basis asking if they could find me a job, and if I could send them a CV for it. They would always have a job in mind, so at that point I would write a CV tailored for that job, email it off and then on to the next.

It's incredibly stressful, time consuming and a right pain in the butt to re-write a CV multiple times a day, but that got me a few interviews and a job within 2 weeks of looking. It's now 4 months on and i'm still loving this new job

Top 3 I got feedback from were:

    www.monster.co.uk
    www.fish4jobs.co.uk
    www.theitjobboard.com

I'd recommend signing up with the other suggestions too as the more you sign up for the better your odds. Just keep track of where your CV is, so that when you do get a job you can take it down! Otherwise you will be inundated with calls for weeks.

Re: Best places to look for a job within IT?

The suggestions above are all good. When I first started contracting I used jobserve, jobsite, and cwjobs but that was several years ago now. Apply to anything and everything you are even remotely interested in. As someone else mentioned, be prepared to have many versions of your CV, tailored to specific key words recruiters and client HR departments are looking for. Prepare to be fed loads of BS from most agents, who are generally ranked alongside Foxton agents. If there are any positions you are especially interested in then chase the agents. Don’t wait for them to call you after 24 hours, even if they say they will. Desperate? Can be at times but when the market is in their favour then you have to fight for it.
