Lightbulb The best way to go...

    1) 760 @ £210 (aims at 7950 Boost?)

    or

    2) 770 @ £330 (aims at 7970 GHz)

    Additional Info

AMD join in with new product in 6 months, not just supped up old tech.
AMD seem to target 20% gains, so does this mean that we will see 20% increase at a slightly elevated price point
AMD will likely have drivers ready and optimised for the new games due to the console deals.

Is it prudent to go with the 760 which saves £120 towards a new card in the future?
In other words is it unwise to buy a 770?

You do realise the GTX760 and GTX770 are "supped up old tech" too?

They use the SAME GK104 GPU found in the GTX680,GTX670 and GTX660TI.

At 1920x1080, do you really need more than a 760?

I've not heard any rumours of an impending AMD release... anyone here the wiser?

CAT: I think he's suggesting that

...a 700 range is currently a tweak on the 600 series already. Whether the next AMD release is going to be a tweak or not is still open for discussion though!

Tweaked drivers because of the PS4 and XBOne.... well, this may happen but they don't arrive until later this year, so surely it's going to be some time before we see any benefit from that.

Bottom line, if you are willing to wait 6 months for new tech then you are going to be waiting forever! Take your budget, take the games you play, and buy the best card that fits.

Volcanic islands "Hawaii" 8XXX was postponed and its now due for a paper release with the consoles at christmas. Expect retail supply in the new year.
Damn technology! I want the 770 but I don't want to be bitten by AMD, hence thinking the 760 gives me £120 discount off a future upgrade.

Its more of a want than a need.

Re: The best way to go...

I'm in a similar situation. Money doesn't really matter to much so I WANT a 780 but is there really a need? But then I'll be running at 2560x1440 so will the lower vRam of the 770/760 come back to bite me in the ass later? How about 760 SLI as its doing well at the moment? How about a 760 to scratch the itch of a new gpu (still running on a 460) and then buy one of the new 8xxx series at Christmas? Argh choices!

I would not even bother going over the 760 and if you going to upgrade at alater stage with a couple of screens. It'll be cheaper going sli with the 760

Re: The best way to go...

I believe your right. I shouldn't see the 760 as a step down, but rather a stepping stone. If AMD do shake things up it would easy sell for £100+
I never trust multi card set ups, I think its better to sell and buy a better card.

Re: The best way to go...

I was in similar sitation few days ago, deciding between 760,770 and 7950. I ended buying 760 as it's among cheapest options so even if future cards turn to be "so much better" I won't lose much by selling them. OC does bring it close to 770 which is monster at 1920x1080.

Re: The best way to go...

Well I was kinda all set for a 760 and now is sounds as if AMD are going to make an irruption of sorts.
Rumours are hinting that as a release partner for Battlefield 4 there is going to be a joint release due October, with the 9970

    edit:
Performance could be between the 780 and Titan. Will be interesting to see the price.
Probably expect it to match the 780 on price forcing nvidia to reduce prices.
In other words I expect AMD to offer 5 - 10% gains at the current price point.

So maybe the 760 is still worth it....

What games is your 560Ti struggling with at the minute?

i.e. do you *need* to upgrade, or do you just want to?

    This.

If a major release is indeed expected in October, I'd be willing to soldier on for a few months. As I asked earlier though, if you're sticking with 1080p, do you really need to go for anything with more punch than a 760? It's going to pretty much max out any game at that res, unless you're going for those uber texture packs like you can get on the Crysis series.

I think I've decided (think & decided lol) to go for the single 760 at the moment to keep me going for a few months until I see what AMD are doing.

The 760 offers similar performance to the 670 (well, the OC'd versions certainly do), and I manage reasonably well at 1600p with 670. So, a 760 will get by at 1440p with a few compromises in some 'system killer' games - there won't be a great deal of slack available for future performance hungry titles though. It might be worth saving a little more.

[edit] do you plan to go 1440p or do you already have it?

Plan to get the 27inch 1440p at the same time as the GPU... big chunk of money.

edit: but then I did just get £1000 back from the taxman so its 'free' right?

60 FPS on high settings is my minimum requirement.
560Ti was for Battlefield 3, so I guess I 'NEED' and upgrade for when BF4 arrives.
