It says on the first page.

The cost of the premium seems to be typically 2.35 percent of the purchase, but this will vary according to the risks associated with the component in question.

Re: News - SCAN launches innovative component installation insurance

From reading the website it seems that it covers damages to the components. Then when you go read the PDF it seems to exclude all of that. I can only think of one example which is dropping the item and breaking it, but does anyone really do that?

I'm guessing most of the components that get damaged are damaged electronically and not physically (ie overvoltage through PSU or some component catching fire). That electronic damage might be due to overclocking or sometimes without user interaction (PSU blowup? Faulty components damage item bought).

I suppose it will put customers minds at rest and give them a push to do a self build, but that's if those customers see and hear about it.

Downside is that every time you order you'll (unless you do want it) have to tick no I don't want and then confirm it

Like Saracen has said the policy doesn't seem to get enough exposure, as you're not forced to read what you're getting into, more like an optional read.

EDIT - Seems it remembers your option choice so that's not so bad after all.

EDIT AGAIN - Doesn't remember it anymore...

Once logged into the site to get a quote you just need to add the products into your basket. The Scansure charge for your order with show under the VAT charge.

I have to say I quite like the idea, but if course it's limited by only applying to the components in that order: so if I order watercooling kit and leak it all over my old PC it's not covered, but if I buy new PC bits and my existing watercooling leaks all over them, I am covered!? Of course, if I do water-cool something older then decide to move the WC kit to a new machine this insurance makes a lot of sense, and in those circumstances I'd definitely take it, as long as the charge isn't too extotionate (~£5 to cover a £200 graphics card? Fair enough )...

True: this might have been more relevant in the bad old Socket A days were every time you took the cooler on or off you risked digging a whole in your motherboard! But if I do go watercooled in the near future, having some security against leaks during installation would be more than welcome...

The reason why this is for 28 days is because the majority of Customer would have installed their components within 28 days. Also cost wise for a shorter period IE 1 week the cost would be the same but if we were to offer this for a longer period then the cost would be a lot more.

In addition over 70 %of RMAs happen within the first 28 days.

    Best Regards

Playing devil's advocate for a second, does that figure include DOA hardware?

Sure, it's put forward as a nice helpful idea, but really what you're doing is spreading your cost of your RMA's over every customer and just saving yourself a shedload in phone call arguements with people who can't fit components properly.

I especially dislike the idea that you're automatically adding an extra charge to every customer's order, something like this should clearly be an opt-in proceedure, not an automatic charge you have to remember to click off.

Sorry Scan, I've always liked your honest customer service and staff helpfulness, but this is just a plain price increase packaged in a pretty name

I will be building a system use and will use scan because of this, as it is my first build and don't want to take unneccessary risks. But I think that people who don't know what they're doing may try to upgrade/ build PCs and not really take many precautions as they know that they can claim on their insurance.

I'm not so sure about this - I'd have thought the majority of buyers from Scan are PC enthusiasts who don't really need this.
I can understand how it would be a great option for some people, but I'd have thought making it an OPT-IN would be better.

And for that reason, I'm out!
