    4850 and 9800GTX for £125

    http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=13913

Hexus have the 4850 and will be publishing their benchmarking later this afternoon.

as Nvidia have just dropped the 9800GTX to $199 too, I guess that tells us roughly what the performance of the 4850 will be Isn't competition great

So, does a £125 9800GTX float your boat? Personally I think I'll wait for the 4870 benchies to see if it sits nicely in between the 9800GTX/4850 and the GTX 260, the latter of which is a little out of my price range at the moment.

    Re: 4850 and 9800GTX for £125

Its a good sign yes but I'll wait for the review. Fingers crossed it beats the 9800GTX.

If the HD4850 beats the 9800GTX I think that the HD4870 will be competing with the GTX260 which would be awesome. The launch price AMD have set makes me believe if nVidia can drop there prices AMD will easily be able to drop theirs further. nVidia will have a harder time dropping prices because of the large die sizes for the GTX200 series so they might start making a loss on cards if AMD's cards are good enough.

Interesting times ahead in the GFX market, seems to be a definite boost to the market with ATI competing with nVidia again even though it might be on price/performance. Lets hope ATI can gain some ground on nVidia and even the market out

    Re: 4850 and 9800GTX for £125

Well if you have not heard already nvidia are releasing the GeForce 9800 GTX+.(notice the "+" sign - this will be a 55nm refresh of G92) in July 2008.

    Specs for:
    GeForce 9800 GTX+
    - £130+
    - 55nm
    - Core clock: 738 MHz
    - Shader clock: 1836 MHz
    - 512MB GDDR3 Memory @1100 Mhz

    GeForce 9800 GTX
    - £180 (expect this price to drop)
    - 65nm
    - Core clock:675Mhz
    - Shader clock: 1688 MHz
    - 512MB GDDR3 Memory @1000 Mhz

Personally I think the GeForce 9800 GTX+ just another filler to fight ATI's mid-range card.

You may as well just overclock your standard 9800GTX and you'll get the same performance. Its not a major release and probably will have little effect on the market as the ATI card is hopefully going to be faster anyway.

Firstly.......i wouldnt get too carried away with the new ATI/AMD cards just yet.
We have heard the 'ATI/AMD are coming back to the forefront' so many times over the last 18-24 months and it hasnt happened.

The processors and GPUs somply havent competed on the same level as nVidia/Intel for a long time. The ATI 3850/3870 are decent enough but still not good enough for a company that spends millions on development.

There is no way on this planet that a 9800GTX will be £125 in the foreseeable future (well...for the next 6-12 months anyway).

You simply cannot take a USA price and do the currency conversion and expect the prices to reflect here. We ALWAYS pay more for our hardware and thats never likely to change.

If you find the 9800GTX for £125 or under brand new in the next 6 months in the UK i will buy it for you.

As for the new flagship nVidia cards.....£470
If anyone pays more than £250 for a GPU these days they should be sectioned and give electric shock treatment forthwith!!
The speed at which GPU's move on make this madness because as soon as you buy a GPU, the technology is old and its replaced.

    Re: 4850 and 9800GTX for £125

ATi know they can't compete with Nvidia on performance, we know it, they know.. everyone knows it

What you need to ask yourself is how much power do you actually need? The HD4850 from what we have seen is better than the 9800GTX and at £130 ATi are pricing it so fairly it seems stupid not to buy it.

Looking at some early benchmarks (link) for the 4850 its able to match the 8800 GT and the 9800 GTX cards but i am curious what the Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ will offer into the mix.

If it matches the 8800GT then there is little point in buying it.

You can get an 8800GT for £100 or a little under.

I'm not sure as I cannot read partners minds but it's a strong suspicion they will drop the prices.

    Re: 4850 and 9800GTX for £125

Results actually looks decent. I was always hoping for more but had this niggling thought in the back of my mind that it might not even compete with the 8800 or 9800 but this is good. Its on beta drivers so I'm sure the results from the newer Catalyst 8.6 would allow slightly better results but with it beating the 8800 and 9800 by 1-2FPS on average for most of the tests I'd be happy to purchase the ATI over the nVidia equivalent.

At last, I may have a route to a new graphics card!

Actually, if you take the US price, halve it, then add 17.5% VAT you do get pretty close to the online prices of things in the UK. There are some cases, mostly with rebates where this doesn't apply, but it is much closer than it used to be. Which is good.

If nvidia have actually dropped the price of the 9800GTX to $199 then we should see that reflected here too, though when it might happen is anybody's guess.

I am hoping that the 4850 was benchmarked on early/beta drivers as at the moment I'm unimpressed... 8800GT performance is not what we were expecting...

The speed at which GPU's move on make this madness because as soon as you buy a GPU, the technology is old and its replaced.
As long as no one pays more then you would, they are sane eh?

£400 for an 8800GTX nearly 2 years ago and still going strong against todays cards. Kind of proves that GPUs do not move on that fast at all.

Its time that moves fast, not the market. I shocked myself when looking for the purchase date of my card. Never dreamt it would have been almost 2 years.

If people are silly enough to jump for every new card, then they will waste a lot of money unnecessarily, pick the right card to blow your cash on and it can be a wise purchase, although anyone thinking of purchasing right now should wait a bit IMO though, at least until the 4870x2 has been released so we can see what happens to pricing.

I guess that inflation and the scares of a recession must be taking its grip on some forum members as the amount of "You must be an idiot to spend X" posts around here lately have really been annoying me, never used to see them before and they stink of jealousy (if I cannot justify spending that much, then anyone who does is an idiot!).

Can we leave this BS out of future posts and stick to technical details please? These forums are for sharing information, not knocking people who can justify greater spending then yourself. By all means state that the price/performance ratio isn't as good as X or Y. But to state people are "idiots" or "should be sectioned" is not really in the spirit of these forums.
