I remember there was another guy on here with a same sort of problem like that with an OcUK machine. Plays WoW, the machine BSoD's or something. OcUK = Not good for buying PC's from.

I thought it was a solid built game (albeit boring storyline).

Don't let the buyer's regret cloud your judgement! Run an orthos test so that all your cpu cores are taxed for a few hours. If you bluescreen during that, you have a problem (especially if it happens very early on). Maybe the voltages haven't been set correctly by the company that put it together (if its overclocked, or the memory timings have been tightened).

hmm, yeah it is overclocked as a matter of fact..

What test do you reccomend? I'd never heard of an orthos test til now, just googled it and found a thread on xtremesystems forum where some people talk about which they prefer - it's just another word for stress test right?

Yeap. For a Quad I just use Prime95 running for a few hours (Error checking on) and if it all passes then I move on to my memtest and then 3DMark
I always make sure my ram is stock or lower than stock when doing my Prime95 to make sure it isn't the ram giving me errors.

If you are blue screening with the PC overclocked, you need to set it back to default and test again.

If you paid for a "guaranteed overclock", then you will need to jump through some hoops I expect....and knowing ocUK, they will be very tricky hoops to jump through

Thanks, RAM isn't oc'd as far as I know but what's the memtest for that?

As for 3DMark no idea why but doesn't work on my PC: goes through all the tests, but at the end on the webpage popup doesn't display any results just some basic specs (OS etc)??? I keep cookies to ask first but I'm pretty sure it's allowed I looked in the Allow/Block "exception list" and tried clicking the view results button in 3DMark with default browser as Firefox then IE, same result, dunno what's wrong? I got same thing gor the vista version of 3dmark too, "vantage" :/

Hmm take a print screen of what it pops up. It might be popping your system specs up but I've never heard of such a problem where when you click submit score or view online it shows that.

As for Windows, it's unstable to alot of other users but it's never gone haywire for me, just stable. Could be drivers making it BSoD as well who knows.

will take screenies asap, need to shop for a new monitor, sent that 3008wfp back today and found to dismay the new PC has only DVI connections so my old screen is useless - trying to find a good CRT fast (I'm put off LCDs now)

I'd run Orthos first, two instances and set their affinity in the task manager so that each instance uses 2 different cores (so that they don't use the same cores as each other). Run that for a while and if it bluescreens, or there are any calculation errors in the messages pane, you have an unstable overclock, which could be for a number of reasons. FSB voltage, the CPU voltage, or even memory voltage could be set too low.

When I built my first system, i tightened the memory timings so that they ran at the advertised latency of 4-4-4-12. After, for months I noticed occasional bluescreens, and eventually realised the memory was running undervolted (1.8V when it should have been 2.1).

If its bluescreening, then you could try to adjust the voltages, or default the clockspeed and slowly work up to a stable overclock again, or you can tell OCUK that Q6600 2.40GHz @ 3.00GHz usually means stable at that speed.

Try memtest as already stated, memory issues have in the past been my case of coming across the blue screen on a new PC. Hope it's fixed soon.

Vista 64 bit by any chance? I have had my Quad core machine for over a year now and it has never crashed/blue screened in XP.
However, I have set it up to dual boot into Vista x64 and I have had numerous problems, several blue screens and even a red screen of death - which I didn't even know existed. Some games e.g. Far Cry 2 crash very quickly under Vista, but for some reason will play happily for hours under XP.
I think it is related to the ATI 4850, as the crashes are often preceded by graphical corruption.
I have done Extensive Prime95 and Memtest and had no issues. In the end, I just use XP...

i have been using vista 64 for about 8 months and i have not had a single lockup caused by windows. though there seams to be one common denominator in both you circumstances, your both running ati drivers which for both of you could be the cause of your blue screens. have you tried using older or newer drivers. since for the both of you the crash happens when a direct3d application is running
