Yeah I'd blame ATI drivers. I recently switched to an ATI card for the first time in years (thought that their driver issue days were over), and now Alt-Tabbing causes games to hang that were perfectly happy under NVidia. Annoying. Wish I'd shelled out the extra £20-£30 quid and stuck with NVidia.

I have read elsewhere people suggesting such problems with ATI drivers too. Not sure if that is the case but it is entirely possible, as the crashes seem related the 4850. I have tried four or five different drivers but all had the problems.
What I should do of course is try Vista 32bit, but I haven't got around to it yet, and after all the hassle I've had I'm happy just to stick with XP... Lazy I know...

I'll be sure to post here if/when I try Vista 32bit and what difference it makes (apart from me losing ~0.5Gb of my 4GB RAM )

Got my DVI to VGA adapter from Kikatek FINALLY (I thought about getting one from Scan but they only had a cheapo generic one, I wanted a Belkin one to make sure), back on my proper PC now. Going to run those tests now, will post back.

I got same thing gor the vista version of 3dmark too, "vantage" :/
Hmm take a print screen of what it pops up. It might be popping your system specs up but I've never heard of such a problem where when you click submit score or view online it shows that.
Downloading 3dmark06 v110 (dx9) and and 3dmark vantage v101 (dx10) again now, just under 1GB total, gonna be about 30-50 mins, I had uninstalled them

got Prime95 as recommended, picked the 64bit one since its vista64, but on the page says that's something to run for a long time overnight so I'll do that last (assuming memtest is quicker that is)?

This one is what you meant by memtest right? On google there's a few programs with the same name

Not sure how to check if memory is overclocked, but I don't think it is as far as I know

3dmark06: Ok the program seems to work now, maybe it was just a bad install first time:

first with all 3D settings in catalyst control panel set to quality/maximum (force on software):
    http://service.futuremark.com/result...&resultType=14

second with all 3D settings in catalyst turned to let software decide:
    http://service.futuremark.com/result...&resultType=14

Why is it so low? I don't get it... it's right at the bottom of the "similar PCs" chart and the "common system" with much lower specs outperforms loads......... what's wrong :/

    edit: fixed links

Seems the webpage on futuremark.com that gives out trial keys for Vantage is broken, so I'll skip that...

Going to run that memtest program I linked above now, hope it's the right one moogle meant.

Re: first blue screen on new vista PC! got it on friday!

I use that memtest yep. But before I do use that one I use HCI Memtest.

It runs in Windows and tests all available ram. I usually use that and make sure it passes in Windows then I move on to using the Memtest86 after to verify it's all stable. Much more meticulous method by me but it ensures that the system is fully stable.

You can skip Vantage, it's a waste anyway it's only 1 run unless you got it registered. Use the free version of 06. I think your CPU scores look okay it's just the graphics card that is quite low.

any idea why? I mean, it's very odd it's a lot newer than the other graphics cards mentioned... and it's supposed to be the best at the moment, not sure how I can find out how it's set up wrong or whatever...

It could be drivers, could be running at a lower state (ie limited bandwidth PCI-E x16 slots).

Check in CPU-Z on the 3rd tab I think to see what the GPU is running at. Another user had a problem with their card too and managed to fix it. I'll see if I can find the post here.

EDIT - This is the type of score you should be getting with your system

mmm, I'm 1000 behind that other PC's CPU score though too even though it's same and same clocked :(

I ran memtest by the way, I couldn't find a log file saved anywhere? After it had finished testing via the boot DVD I made though, it said no problems found.

3rd tab you say on CPU-Z? I downloaded the prog from here, the tabs are CPU, Cache, Mainboard, Memory, SPD and About, no graphics card one

Well it seems your card is running at x16. It was the Mainboard tab I was talking about where it says "Link Width: x16"

I'm confused as to why it's still doing this. Try and download GPU-Z and get it to log in the backround the GPU sensors and post it after you've run another 3DMark past it.

Never used the program before, I set it to log to a file and minimised it then ran 3DMark06, hope I did it right, I don't understand why it says 0 GPU load?

Re: first blue screen on new vista PC! got it on friday!

with all lowest/"performance" settings via catalyst control panel I ran it again:

    GPU-Z log: http://pastebin.com/f5cdefc1

It looks like GPU-Z only logs for a few seconds then stops, very odd the program itself doesn't actually close or give any errors....
