Project: Cheap Upgrade

I suppose the cheap bits gone out of the window already , even if i have been trying to stick to using s/h parts where possible. After building the kids new pc, i decided mine need a little spruce up, and the case was getting a bit small for the new gen gfx cards, and hdd space was tight, so i treated myself...to a Lian Li V1010.





So there was a bit more space to move for starters. Forum hunting has so far bought about...

MSI P35 Neo2 & Q6600 G0
8gb quad channel Geil Black Dragon PC6400 kit
500gb Seagate server spec drive
300gb Velociraptor

Bits being carried over from my old 'puter are...

Corsair HX620
3x 500gb Seagate server spec drives
2x IDE dvdrw's

Next on the list of wants are...

Windowed side panel

All of which it looks like are going to need to be bought new, unless i drop lucky . So there you go kids, once you start down the road of a 'cheap' upgrade, it'll all end in tears!!!.

Those wheels do look like just a useless gimmick, I can't see where i would ever use them.
Other than that it looks like a really nice case

I've got an early version of that case (V1000) Interesting to see they put the motherboard the right way up in the later ones.

I like the wheels makes it easy to drag it forward, I even fitted castors to the previous lian-li case I had.

Looks like it's going to be a nice machine when you are finished (and well over your initial budget). My last and cheapest upgrade cost me £500 in the end.

Yup, another Lian Li lover here as well...was well sad i'd outgrown my PC-61 . I'd originally put a wanted on here for a V1000 but with 99p weekend shipping i got the V1010 from SVP for about £136 delivered...was expecting to pay up to £100inc for a secondhand V1000 tbh.

As for the upgrades, its got a bit out of control i think but it'll be years before i do anything again. Plus running Skt939 X2 stuff, i managed to get some good prices for my old bits.

Very very unlikely to get thoes cheap.
Maybe the windowed side panel, although if you have the tools a side panel window is pritty easy to do, and not that expensive.

If you want cheaper options look for a 2nd hand 4870, has the same rough performance just lacks the extra dx11 dangly bits

Some 2nd hand water cooling bits is a possible as well, a 120mm rad and 775 block should be fairly easy to get cheap.

I don't know whether I missed it or not but I didn't see you state what it would be used for or what kind of budget "cheap" refers to Going by your spec I'm guessing you are using it as some sort of server....an internet server or for streaming media to other pc's or DLNA devices perhaps? It seems over specified for a print server hehe

But then the CPU cooler, PSU and GPU are giving me the impression you might also play some games...

Case looks good, must be pretty damn big to have >15" without including the 5.25" bays.

The problem I find with looking at cheap upgrades is that you inevitably start looking at nice shiny new technology and you get feature creep (and price creep to boot!) and before you know it cheap has gone out the window!!

I would, spend loads of time pulling my P180 across the floor to get at the back panel connectors.
