Gigabit Switch, Gigabit NIC, 100Mbps Connection

Just trying to figure this out - my PC has a built in Gigabit NIC, and is connected to a Gigabit Switch with Cat6 cable, but the connection is running at 100 Mbps

Is that because the router is set at 100 Mbps? And if I plug another PC into the switch with a Gigabit NIC, will the two be able to transfer files to each other at Gigabit Ethernet speeds?

It may be that your NIC is set to auto detect. Try going ionto device manager and set NIC speed to Gigabit.

The switch should allow the two PCs to talk at Gig speeds and the router run at 100Mb.

Have you tried forcing 1000Mbps full duplex in the NIC settings? The NIC *should* auto detect, but they don't always.

Re: Gigabit Switch, Gigabit NIC, 100Mbps Connection

I tried doing that, got limited connection flash up and then when it had finally reconnected properly it was still at 100 Mbps.

I think the problem is that I've only got the one PC plugged in at the minute - I'll go and get my laptop and try again.

Are you positive it is a gigabit switch? If so try this. unplug router lead from switch. Power cycle the switch. plug your NIC into the switch and, if necessary power cycle the PC. This is just to check that the switch isn't being held at 100Mb by the router - it shouldn't be but funnier things have happened

Re: Gigabit Switch, Gigabit NIC, 100Mbps Connection

i have the exact same problem on this computer, however i have another computer connected to the same switch that syncs at 1gbps
the switch itself is connected to a 100mbps router

if i force 1gbps on this computer it will keep connecting and disconnecting and then finally settle on 100mbps

i can't figure out for the life of me why it's acting like this :/

    Spot on mate, nice one!

    Cheers

EDIT: By the way, just to clarify, it's stuck at 1Gbps after I attached the router.

Cool. Weird but oh well. If you ever need to take things apart and redo them you'll know not to plug in the router until you have a PC running.

Re: Gigabit Switch, Gigabit NIC, 100Mbps Connection

Yeah, it's bizarre how it does that... it's as if the first cable that is plugged in determines the switch's speed and it won't move up a gear whatever happens. Short of rebooting it anyway.

Try plugging router in after you have both PCs up - you might need to power cycle the router.
