Grisoft, why oh why oh why? (AVG 8 content)

I've used AVG Free for years, trouble free and it's always been so light and fresh.

Now the super shiny fantastic AVG 8.0 comes to town and brings with it, a group of fat friends.

I don't want a Link Scanner, but I don't want a stupid exclamation mark telling me I haven't enabled it.

I don't care that the number of poisoned web sites is increasing and when I click hide, I mean hide.

I do want a daily scan of my PC, but I don't want you to use every bit of CPU power I have left to do so. 7.5 didn't do that, why must 8?

Am I being unreasonable? I've tinkered with all the settings and the effect is the same, it's greedy, bloated and I hate it.

What else is there, what else comes highly recommended?

Kaspersky is coming very highly rated these days (by myself and many others), but if you need free I tend to prefer Antivir.

I know for daily scans when you install it there is an option to turn this off.

Doesn't Antivir nag you everytime you boot your PC to buy the paid for version?

avast is probably the least intrusive free av (once you disable sounds)

antivir is light on resources, but has spammy "upgrade" popups on occasion

or spent a fiver on an OEM copy of something better

NOD32 is very good, don't think there's a free version though. Pretty light and not failed me yet. Just wish it wouldn't give me a little tooltip every time it updated(2-3times a day).

you tried adjusting the slider at the bottom?
putting it on automatic or slow scan drops the CPU usage to around 10%..
but when it's on fast scan it uses 100% of my CPU..

    - open the AVG user Interface
    - Tools, Advanced Settings
    - you can change how much a scan will use, from the off in there

does it do it straight after it's completed the 'rapid' scanning of the registry?
i don't see why it should use 100% of your processor on 'slow scan' 'cause you have a pretty good CPU at hand..

Wasn't aware of the popups for Antivir: to be honest I haven't used it in a while myself (KIS all the way for me) but when I last used it the only downside was it's tendency to false positives.

Re: Grisoft, why oh why oh why? (AVG 8 content)

As soon as the AVG scan begins, the CPU usage (not the one in my system - sorry - P4 3.4Ghz and Athlon 64 3800+) goes nuts.

I'm going to try some more tweaking as it doesn't seem to be a widely reported issue, but I'm still looking at a replacement for the other reasons in my post.

Oops sorry mate misread your post. TBH I use AVG 8 and haven't had any problems with it. I did uninstall version 7.5 before installing version 8. Might be worth a try if you didn't do this first just in case version 7.5 left any crap on your system causing it to slow down.

Kaspersky is very good and is cheap on OEM at Scan.

I got a 3 licence version of Kaspersky Interent Security the other week for £14

what does OEM actually mean when talking about Anti-Virus programs?
    is it the same rules?
needs to be re-installed with a new motherboard?

what happened to your picture aswell?
    you're not the same anymore
how can we now recognise your posts?

At what priority though? The program *should* use 100% CPU when nothing else is running, something's not quite right if it doesn't, but it should jump out of the way as soon as something else needs the CPU. The only reason AVs don't always use 100% when scanning is because they're waiting for data to be read off the disk - the faster the disk the more likely you are to get higher CPU usage.

edit: Oh if you do get AVAST just be careful with false detections - a recent update made it (wrongly) think there was a trojan in The Witcher game.
