    Upgrading the PS3 HDD

    Hey all,

I've had my Jap 20GB PS3 since march last year, I originally brought it just for playing Blu-ray movies, that was until I got bored waiting for my first batch of blu-ray movies to arrive and decided to buy 'Resistance Fall of Man' which turned out to be an excellent game, finding more ps3 games of that quality has been difficult to say the least especially when game developers keep putting back the release dates of decent games.

    Recently purchased:
UT3 - Not impressed with the gameplay so far.
F.E.A.R. - Just arrived today, haven't had time to install it yet.

    On Pre-Order:
Turning Point: Fall of Liberty - Nazi's invading the US, Come on!
    Haze
    KillZone 2
Tiberium - Hopefully this will be better than CnC Renegade

NEWay, when all the new decent games do come out I'm pretty sure I will run out of space on the current 20GB HDD for game installations so I need help on choosing on a bigger HDD replacement for the PS3 between these 3:

    120GB Western Digital WD1200BEVS Scorpio, 2.5", SATA150, 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms @ £40.71

    120GB Samsung HM121HI Spinpoint M, 2.5", SATA I, 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms @ £43.01

    120GB Toshiba MK1237GSX, 2.5", SATA, 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms HDD @ £45.81

I tend to buy either WD, Samsung or Hitatchi drives for my current PC rig but i've never brought a Laptop drive before so any help towards choosing a replacement for the PS3 would be appreciated.

    TIA

Hello mate i'm thinking of upgrading soon as well and i found these walkthrough's quite handy.

    GamersReports

Looks like you've found some good drives although i might go larger than 120gb but keeping to 5400rpm maybe.

Yeah I found the Gamersreports walkthrough yesterday, seems simple enough 2 do. I'll backup my saved game files on my flash voyager.

I think 120GB should be enough, but then again I might fork out for a 250GB as u can never have enough disk space u know.

Any of those drives will do. The only thing you need to make sure is that its 5400rpm and its SATA I, thats all really. Its extremely easy to change it out, took me 2 minutes.

I ordered this Samsung 250GB SATA drive, which should be more than ample for my current needs.

Looks like just the job. Shouldnt have any problems with that. Don't forget to back up all your existing save data, videos, music etc before sqapping the drive!

2 Minutes my A, it may have been 2 minutes for people who didn't have over tightened hdd screws but for me, Unlucky. B4 anyone says I have the right size screw driver, but the screws we're a total sod to remove. They just did not wanna budge with a screwdriver so I used my switchgrip pliers in the end and that loosened them enough to be screwed out, after that nightmare was over the HDD replacement was dead easy.

I'm not the only one to have this problem either, according to a fair few forums.

I didn't realise how small and tiny those laptop drives we're, should have guessed really considering laptop sizes n all.

The Samsung 250GB drive booted up just fine, the format was performed quickly which was nice, after format and system files I have 205GB of free space.

Scan provided yet another painless order experience: ordered Sunday dispatched Monday, arrived Tuesday, job done!

  10. Received thanks from:
