Thumbs down POST stops at '5d'

    Hi,

I have just finished building a new machine using:

    Fatal1ty-AN9-32X
    Athlon 64 X2 5000 2.6GHz 1MB Dual Core processor
Noctua NH-U12 CPU heatsink & fan
    2Gb Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500 RAM in slots 3 & 4
    Nvidia GeForce 7600GS
    Enermax 1000W EGA1000EWL Galaxy PSU
    4 x Seagate 400GB 7200.10 SATA II HDDs
    LiteON LH-20A1H 20X DVD+/-RW/RAM

I seem to have two problems, however one may not actually be a problem - I'm not sure.

    1. The PSU has various alarms & safety features. When I connect power to ATXPWR1 and also to ATX4P1 (the aux power for PCI-E cards), I get a short-circuit warning and the PSU switches itself off. Remove the ATX4P1 power and the alarm is gone, so I left that out

    2. More worryingly, on first boot everything goes swimmingly until the boot screen. The POST display stops at 5d. The monitor shows a message along the lines of Press TAB for POST screen, Del for Setup. Sounds fair except that pressing either (or in fact any) key does absolutely nothing

I have tried both the keyboard I'm using right now (PS2) and a spare USB keyboard. Both work fine on other machines. I have flushed the CMOS as instructed in the manual, by the way.

    Any suggestions?

fatoldtramp it sounds like the problem could well be your RAM - and it's required voltage to operate at "default" speeds. The IN9 like most abit boards boots at a default voltage of 1.8volts. Having had a nosy on Corsairs site it looks like that memory needs 2.2volts so what happens is that the memory is unable to successfully boot. If you've no other ram try just one stick as it'll put less burden on the board and u may be able to get into the BIOS.

Just tried it, regrettably to no effect. I also tried 1 stick of Corsair's CM2X1024-6400 but that did not work either. Looks like I'm going to have to buy some cheap RAM to get my system to work. Blast

512Mb of PC World's cheapest PC2-5300 DDR2 667 Mhz SDRAM later and still no go. I think the RAM route is starting to look like a serious red herring.

    Ah well.

Did a google and found this
    forum.abit-usa.com/archive/index.php/t-122830.html

Unfortunately the forum is down for maintenance atm. However the link refers to a post with the exact same problem as yours. Hopefully when the forum is back up it may help resolve the problem.

    Found some more info
    5D
    1. Initialize Init_Onboard_Super_IO
    2. Initialize Init_Onbaord_AUDIO
60 Okay to enter Setup utility; i.e. not until this POST stage can users enter the CMOS setup
    utility
Since 5D is prior to the "okay to enter setup utility" ie bios it explains that part of the issue.

I also found another forum post re 5D post code error, this was regarding a Chaintech board but since it uses an Award bios it indicated the same issue. He resolved the issue by putting the ram into a different slot. On his board the middle ram slots were faulty.
I would suggest trying 1 ram stick in each slot and see if that enables it to boot.

The above gives a more complete list of the Abit codes than the Abit site.

Furthest from CPU. Hmm. Maybe if I move it. I'll try.

Oooh, interesting, thanks. Lets hope it comes back up PDQ

    Ahh, makes sense.

I would suggest trying 1 ram stick in each slot and see if that enables it to boot.
I've tried that with the only two slots available to me as the darn Noctua heatsink is so *large* it overhangs slots 1 & 2. It'll have to go, but I'm not sure what I'll replace it with as yet.

    Thanks for your help.

    Ahah!

One Gb of Corsair CM2X1024-6400 RAM and the video card in the right slot and we're off

Now I just have to figure out how to change the RAM voltages to accommodate 2 x 1Gb of the CM2X1024-6400 (that's what I'll stay with - the Dominator RAM can go in another system I'm building). Manual reading time

Many thanks for your help, DratUK and Johnny Bravo - very much appreciated.

Ahhh so that was what it was. Yeah it seems that that error can be generated by the graphics card being in the lower slot. Glad your system is back up and running mate
