Recently I had a couple of spontaneous reboots while running folding, but it seems to be a one-off as I couldn't replicate it and it's not done it before or since. So no idea what caused them but nothing to point the finger at the PSU as voltages and system temps are all fine.
Folding (certainly the SMP client) is really buggy. I've had it reboot on me before now too.
As much as I like folding (being a good cause and all ) its certainly not one to test system stability with

Ah, thanks for that - yes I'm using the SMP client, I wasn't aware that it was buggy to the extent it could cause a reboot. I've stress tested my system far more than F@H can, and it's all fine, so I was pretty sure it wasn't anything to worry about too much.

from what I read Asus (& others) have problems too.

Frankly I think it is the cpu for the stability issues. There is a great deal of talk about this and the link below is just one of them.

Interesting. It seems as though the opinion swings like a pendulum between whether it's the mobos with the problem, or the CPU diodes.

Scan tested an early batch E8400 on an Intel board with the stock cooler, monitoring it using Intel thermal software, and got decent temp readings from the cores which were much lower than 3rd-party boards. This doesn't make sense to me, as I thought programs like CoreTemp read the diode values without interference from the mobo.

    Which raises a few questions:

    - are programs like CoreTemp accurate?
    - does the mobo BIOS read, relay or have anything at all to do with the DTS diode readings as accessed by various core temperature reading programs?
    - has anyone noticed a difference in core temperature readings when (eg) switching between BIOS 14 and 16B09 on the IP35 Pro?

Sometimes it's hard to differentiate between whether people are talking about core temps or the processor casing temperature, and what things can or cannot influence the readings of the core or case.

other people have tried 2 supposedly similar E8xxx CPUs in the same board (literally take 1 out & replace with the other) & had wildly different reported temps so there is obviously something up with the CPUs - whether it's massive batch variation or what?

I can certainly say that when measuring temps in Core Temp that there is no difference between readings when using these two bioses. Orthos maxed both cores out at @ 55°C on both bioses and both showed idle temps of 26/44 on the cores. (I have one of the cpus which has a stuck core until the temp is raised above 44°C).

Update - finally back up and running. PSU seems ok with all leads connected. Had to let the cmos clear overnight before it would reboot. Now pointing to either a short or possibly a faulty ram stick. Puters; don't ya just love 'em?
