    Abit IP35 BIOS failure

Hi, I tried to update my bios to accept my new CPU, E7400. I used the flashmenu through windows supplied on the mobo driver disk. Started the program and left it to do what it had to. Came back after 10 mins an PC has shut it self down. I try to start it and all it does is spin the hdd and the dvd drives and then switches itself off. Tried connecting an old floppy drive with the case open, to see if it could read a start up disk I made after it failed. No joy. I have used the flashmenu before with no problems, is it possible to recover or do I need to get a new BIOS chip?

Motherboard is the Abit Dark Raider IP35 and currently using an E2160 CPU.

    Thanks in advance,

    Martin

    Re: Abit IP35 BIOS failure

Remember that (unless you unchecked the option) flashing will have reset settings to defaults.
If you have a memory setup that requires more RAM voltage to run that will need to be reset.

do you get any signs of life on the monitor or if you have a floppy fitted any evidence that it is being accessed? see http://pages.sbcglobal.net/jefn/bootblock.html

otherwise you'll need to either get your BIOS chip flashed or buy a pre-flashed replacement.

Whilst flashing in Windows should work on a stable system it's simply inherently riskier than doing it from DOS so for future info http://www.theraptorpit.com/forum/in...showtopic=2628

    Re: Abit IP35 BIOS failure

    BUFF,

Thanks for the reply, no monitor activity and the light comes on the floppy drive. I will try another floppy drive that I know definitely works; have to rob it from my son’s pc.

It powers up just enough to get the fans working then shuts it self of, waits a second or two then spins up again. It will keep doing this until I remove the power lead.

Looks like a new BIOS chip for me.

Yes I have tried that, still did not work. I will have another go, before ordering a new bios chip.

    Thanks

    Re: Abit IP35 BIOS failure

One question before I order the new chip. Is it possible to use an bios chip from another manufacturers board such as Asrock. I have a working machine that has what appears to be the same chip. Would I be able to hot swap the bios chip?

The knacked machine is Abit IP-35, and the working one is an Asrock P4VM800.

    Thanks

    Re: Abit IP35 BIOS failure

Not to give you false hope or anything but triple check resetting the CMOS doesn't work. Every time I update the BIOS for my IP35 Pro I have to do it, first time it happened I had a heart attack.

    Re: Abit IP35 BIOS failure

strip all cards out apart from video, unplug all the drives and take out all ram apart from 1 stick

take the cmos battery out, reset the bios, hit start with the mains off.

put the battery back in, connect the mains and try to boot the pc

    Re: Abit IP35 BIOS failure

You would have to put a compatible CPU in, then flash.

    Re: Abit IP35 BIOS failure

Well I purchased a new BIOS chip of the bay and everything is working again, not been able to put the E7400 chip into this rig yet, currently a E2160. Will let you know if this has sorted my problem. May even try to hot swap the old bios chip so that I have a usable spare.

Thanks again for all your help.
