IP35 pro. Can't boot XP from CDROM

Hi again to the Abit forum. A year ago I put together my abit IP35 PRO system which i dearly love. I was recently hit by a particularly bad Trojan and I need to reload the operating system, which in this case is WinXP. I know how to set the CMOS utility to select the CDROM (actually a DVD) to be the first boot device and so on. Even though this information is saved to CMOS I can not get the computer to boot from the DVD. Even when I disable the hard disc as a device to boot from (in the CMOS setup) it still boots from the hard disc.

As if this whole malware experience has not been bad enough.

You were all a great help to me when i was setting up this computer and i know that someone out there knows this answer.

    Thank You
    Tom

are you using a SATA optical drive or IDE?
if SATA are you selecting the right item in the Boot priority list (it will probably show up as an exact device name about 2nd from the bottom of the list when you scroll down) & not a generic title?

    Buff,

Thank you for your response. Oddly, I only see the generic name of the cdrom in the bios menu. "SATA CDROM". The bios do not recognize the Western Digital, etc, device that I have. I checked all connections and everything seems fine. Please remember, that until I was infected with the virus, this system was working fine. I have cleared the bios and loaded optimized defaults and that had no effect. The reason that my operating system died was that the antivirus software that I installed probably got rid of the virus but took out the operating system files that were infected. All that I am trying to do is re-install the operating system.

I don't know where to go from here.
    Regards
    Tom

you still haven't said whether your optical is SATA or IDE - it sure wasn't made by WD.
Without knowing what you have it's very hard to tell you what to look for but I've a strong suspicion that you have a SATA drive & have selected the wrong option in the boot menu.
either that or it's an IDE & as such again you are looking in the wrong place.

"I don't know where to go from here."
well, you may be getting the idea that a full system spec. (incl. makes & models & how connected) might help others to help you

Re: IP35 pro. Can't boot XP from CDROM

    Buff,

I found the problem with your help. You had suggested that I was selecting the wrong sata drive for the cdrom on bootup in the bios. I thought that I was selecting the correct one. You had suggested that the correct drive would be the one listed in the bios setup as second to the last. Even though the acronim used for this device bore no likeness to the actual CDrom drive that I was using, I tried it anyway. With some luck, on the next bootup cycle, I was given the option of booting from the CDRom. I now have XP loaded back onto my system.

    I owe you my thanks.

    Tom
