What gfx driver are you using? Did you update the driver when it started to happen or did it just start playing up?

Have you tried the other outputs on the gfx card?

Will it boot into safe mode?

    Re: ax78 + geforce 8800gt

Newer Nvidia drivers cause something similar on my 9500gt but my 8800gts / 260gtx are fine. I had to roll back to older drivers to get my 9500gt working.

Sounds like the windows update installed newer drivers which cause the same issue on your 8800gt.

I would suggest you boot into safe mode, uninstall the new drivers and try older ones.
