    Re: Macbook or Macbook Pro

I think i'm going to have to pop to the Apple store and just relook at the colours tomorrow. Just to make sure i want to pay for the black paint job!

That HE 3 year warranty news really sucks; i guess i'm going to just cash out on the Apple care.

    Thanks everyone yet again!

I have been thinking about it but i just don't know how portable the MBP is to carry around.

Just to give everyone a update, i'm now able to get a 20% discount but it won't be under the student discount. So that free ipod is out of the window but hey 20% discount

I think i'm going to wait however until early Oct to see if any updates are coming for the MB.

    Re: Macbook or Macbook Pro

From what i can gather, it's really worth going to an Apple store to check out the options - you're in London, so the Regent Street branch is probably a good choice. I went there yesterday and it's an amazing place, they have loads of laptops with pre installed stuff on that you're free to muck around with. It'll give you an idea of what you're going to buy.

I for one was besotted with the macbook pro (capable of running Final Cut, Photoshop, Aperture and numerous other apps simultaneously at a decent speed - i was very impressed..), but as you say, carrying around and price can be a big issue.

    Re: Macbook or Macbook Pro

RAM installation for the MacBook. The HDD is SATA.

For refurbished macs, checks out the AppleStore on the right-hand side near the bottom is a link marked "special deals" that takes you to their discount store. Another palce for refurbed macs is The Clearance Store, which has a wider range, and includes 2nd-hand machines.

Just so you know, the current rumour is that the MacBook will be replaced with new, slim aluminium models, possibly with a multi-touch touchpad. This might happen next month, or it might be next year.

DVD-ROM/CD-RW. No DVD writing ability. You can get an external USB DVD-RW drive for under £40 if you need to write DVDs.

In what way is the warranty on HE purchases 'much more limited than full applecare'?

There seems to be a lot of confusion about HE purchases and AppleCare. I work at a HE establishment and have recently spoken with several different people at the Apple about. They all told me that the only benefit from buying the AppleCare that is offered with HE purchases is that you extend the phone support to three years. Personally I don't think that it's worth paying £60 for the phone support given the existence of the information resource that is the Internet.

It is worth noting that at time of writing the information regarding AppleCare on the 'Configure your Mac' pages of the HE store is wrong and has been for a long time. It says that you must buy the AppleCare to get a three year warranty which is not the case. As other people on this thread have said and is stated on the portal page for the HE store, all HE purchases have a three year hardware warranty. It is possible to get people at Apple to acknowledge that this information is wrong but apparently not to get anyone to actually fix it.
