    Scatch Disk

    Hi Guys

One of our MAC boys wants to use our Network Attached Storage Device (Snap) as a "Scatch Disk". Had a quick google around and note that this appears to be a swap file or virtual memory for photoshop. Hoping that one of you experts has had experience of this can I ask

    1) The network is only 100mbit (at best) so wont this severely slow down the application?
    2) Would it not be more sensible to add another HD?
    3) Am I correct in assuming that the size of the scratch disk will not affect the speed. i.e. as long as it's 4 times the size of the largest image/file?
    4) The NAS device is greyed out and not selectable. Is this because the security settings on the NAS require login?
    5) Does the scratch disk need to be on a different HD to the application or data?

    Many Thanks

It's better to have the primary scratch on a separte partition to the 'page' file, performance gains being seen for particularly large/complex images. Having it over a network would slow the app down considerably. It does not have to be on a seperate HD to the app or the data.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

The best solution is to have the scratch disc on a separate drive rather than a partition, that way it gets exclusive access rather than sharing it with everything else, and yes, running over the network would be too slow.
