I would like to know if you can install an Apple OS X on a non Apple Based Computer.

Dunno really... that's just some googling. I think not.
Although with Mac changing to Intel chips, it should become easier.
Unless Apple open it up in an attempt to chase market share, but that will be a looooong way down the line if it happens..Originally Posted by directhex

I don't think Apple would be that stupid. However hard they try they will be second best to Microsoft. However, on their own hardware, such as this lovely Powerbook, it is great.Originally Posted by Stoo

I'm not going to get dragged into an urgument about this, but it *is* a possibility, it has nothing to do with stupidity, and everything to do with opening markets.
Virtually everyone in the industry knows that it is an option *in the future*, how long it will take to get to that point is anyone's guess.

My prediction is that they are just shifting their product to use different processors and nothing more. Their machines will still be kind of locked down so that it will be pretty much the same situation as is right now.
Well in the annocement when they said they were moving to intel they also said their hardware will stay locked down and will not be moving into the 'open market' when it comes to PC hardware.

Maybe now Stoo and others can get this 'opening markets' rubbish out of their heads. Apple stated quite clearly OSX wouldn't run on anything other than an Apple, why continue to preach the same assumptions over and over again? Until Apple say "we're going to open our OS up to the entire PC market" you're speculating.
Unless of course you have some insider knowledge the rest of us don't Stoo?

Right Oakey, any chance you could drop the attitude please? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and whilst you are welcome to take Apple's statement at face value, others a more than welcome to speculate what Apple may or may not do in the future.
Oh, and if I remember correctly, Jobs said that they had no interest in the Flash MP3 player market. Hmmm

Software such as PearPC exists, but they are in development, and give roughtly 10% of the speed your PC's specification would give if it was communicating more natively with Mac OS. (Oh, and you'll need to buy a legitimate CD-ROM copy of Mac OS X to use it, as PearPC just emulates the PowerPC architecture )
I daresay the problem will ease slightly once Apple x86 proofs its OS for the Intel changeover, but modding will still be difficult unless they open the OS up for PCs, which as people have said in this thread, is an extremely unlikely scenario.

New Sig on the Way...
What people are failing to understand, as Directhex has pointed out, is that apple are a complete package. By tying people into their hardware they get the best of both worlds and as we all know, Apple hardware is horribly overpriced. Apple can afford to stick this high price on their hardware because people don't have any other option. Why would Apple shoot themselves in the foot, give up this monopoly, lose hardware sales to generic PC's whilst their OS is being pirated and installed on said generic PCs and try to compete with Microsoft who have a strong foothold in the market?
Oakey, personal attacks WILL NOT be tolerated.Originally Posted by Oakey
