I'm off to th Birmingham Bullring Apple store tomorrow to have a look at one of the new 14" iBooks. I'm starting a PGCE at Warwick in September, and the battery life and OS of the Mac appeal to me quite a bit.
Are there any things I should look out for or ask about?
I think a 12" would be better! Much nicer for carting around. They don't really need anything else adding in their new spec!

my shuttle hasnt been turned on in over a month

The only thing you gain is a larger screen, but no larger res.
Like the others say, 12" is far more portable.

If you *could* afford it, consider the pbook line. The quality of the screens are much better specially the 15/17s...even the 12" pbook (rev C at that time) had an ok panel but not as crystal as the 15'/7s...
Still the iBooks are the budget laptops from Apple and maybe the new models are of better quality...
Well, out of the iBooks I looked at, I prefer the size of the 14" model. It also seemed to have a better screen than the 12", but that could have been a problem with that particular example I suppose. In terms of features and size I really like the 15" powerbook, but £1389 is a bit steep. Mind you, I spent plenty of time drooling over the dual-30" Cinema screen setup, and then the 60" HDTV in Dixons
On a more sour note, I managed to get into the Edgbaston Road car park without collecting a ticket, so I had to pay the £15 lost ticket fee to get out. I then took the wrong turning onto the M6 and ended up putting 20 miles on my journey!
Ouch. Actually, Rev C is quite far down the lines so it isn't a specific model problem. It's just that Apple uses a cheaper panel for the 12"...

I'm still waiting to hear exactly how much I'm going to get for the loan, but I'm gunning for the 15" powerbook, with the 14" iBook in second place.
If I get the Airport Extreme base station, will I be able to use it with my PC. Since it will be next to my ntl cable modem, a wired setup between the two would be ok.
The Airport will work fine with any windows pc. You can also network your apple with your pc at the drop of a hat. Can I also recommend the missing manuals 10.4 tiger book for your perusal. Its very good for us convert!

Would I need extra hardware on the PC i.e. a radio network card? Or would an ethernet cable between the airport base and the PC suffice? They'll be kept next to each other, so all that needs to be wireless is the Mac.
Menthel, where can I get hold of that book?
Youd need a standard wireless network card assuming they dont have ethernet ports on (dont think they do)
Get an Airport Express, easy to carry too
