    Exclamation Apple Introduces Boot Camp!

No it's not quite what it sounds, even though sending kids and such to a tight fisted army style camp for Apple join the THINK DIFFERENT SECT does not seem out of this world for Apple.

Check out this big news......... This is official by the way, on apple hot news

    Apple Introduces Boot Camp
Public Beta Software Enables Intel-based Macs to Run Windows XP
CUPERTINO, California—April 5, 2006—Apple® today introduced Boot Camp, public beta software that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP. Available as a download beginning today, Boot Camp allows users with a Microsoft Windows XP installation disc to install Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac®, and once installation is complete, users can restart their computer to run either Mac OS® X or Windows XP. Boot Camp will be a feature in “Leopard,” Apple’s next major release of Mac OS X, that will be previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in August.

“Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple’s superior hardware now that we use Intel processors,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch.”

Boot Camp simplifies Windows installation on an Intel-based Mac by providing a simple graphical step-by-step assistant application to dynamically create a second partition on the hard drive for Windows, to burn a CD with all the necessary Windows drivers, and to install Windows from a Windows XP installation CD. After installation is complete, users can choose to run either Mac OS X or Windows when they restart their computer.

seems apple have finaly cracked, they are dooing what they said they would never do, aid the platform xover!
Personaly I like it, it will bring the world of windows apps onto your mac!
I dont have a macintel to try the beta on, but anyone else fire away!

does it only work on xp? or would windows 2000 pro work too?

also would windows just work as on a normal pc? i.e. apps all supported? and good speed as apposed to virtual pc which is a bit sluggish due to sharing resources etc?

now i am interested in an ibook intel

    ian

shame that it has ultimately come to this!

Downloaded and installed Boot Camp, just in the process of putting XP and SP2 togeather with Slipstreaming, then will be installing.

I'm keeping my blog up to date on http://web.mac.com/andrew.r if you're interested!

Well, if booting directly from xp it should give much much faster performance than virtual PC, which for me was unusably slow.

This will be great if it works, boot camp also includes all the drivers req for ur mac so non of those rumours of fans not workingand overheating.... cant wait to hear some results from macintel owners.

    Well its up and running.

It was relatively painless apart from the disc issues.

Drivers seem to work for most stuff , graphics are stunning. Just installing a few programs and downloading counter strike via steam for a quick game hehe

    It feels so wrong

Windows Xp Sp2 on a Macbook Pro

I have to say the whole process was fairly painless the only issue I had was due to a hard disc error which was down to a bug in Photoshop CS2 as opposed to Boot camp or windows.

The process is fairly straight forward, certainly easier than any other I've seen.

Once you've booted off the windows xp disc is exactly the same as installing windows on any other machine. Only issues I've noted is the lack of the second mouse button which can be got around with this tool http://www.geocities.com/pronto4u/applemouse.html

I had a very quick play with counter strike and it runs just as well as my main machine, only complaint I had was that cs doesn't support the native res of the mbp but that I can deal with.

Just got cs source downloaded and played a quick game.

It plays just the same as my pc apart from the fact I'm using a track pad not a mouse at the moment hehe.

Stress test ran with no problems and came back with a result of 83fps which is more than playable. I was able to run cs:s at the default res of the display 1440x900 which is great news.

I had one crash when I tried to run militia but it was fine with other maps so I think its the version of militia as opposed to the macbook

I took some vids of it in action

And for comedy effect what happened to the dell pc in the office:
