Not bad.. not bad.. i'm saving up for a Pro as it is

I can save a good 500 from the "Education store" mwhahahah

EDIT: Do you reckon that Apple will put something like G80 in their next laptops? The pro currently has a X1600 which is good, but one of the new cards (even a low spec one) would be amazing..

I'm surprised they are still using ATis in the MB Pros at the moment - they may well switch depending on how the whole nVidia/Intel thing pans out. Will intel make better graphics cards? Will nVidia go down the road of graphics + CPU? The result of either could seriously affect the hardware in the macs. I was expecting something like the 7600 series of nVidia cards in the MB Pros with Core 2. I wonder if Apple managed to get the X16s cheap?

switching to core 2 is just a chip change - the mobos are compatible

I realise they are fully compatible - All PCI-X connectivity for graphics now, its just that its like pairing rivals up now. AMD + ATi (essentially the same now) will likely become a paired combination in PCs. Now mac's have switched to Intel, you would have thought they would adopt the other brand. nVidia GPUs found their way in to some of the old powerbooks. I would have thought with the AMD connotation with ATi, Apple would have pushed over to nVidia or may adopt Intel GPUs if they decide to go down that road.

EDIT: Just seems like they are using the classic red & blue combination (ATi/Intel).

My original post was just getting at the pairing of GPU/CPU manufacturers.

    ATi/AMD are already paired up.
Intel make CPUs and are rumoured to be looking at making GPUs.
nVidia have been rumoured to be looking at making CPUs as well as GPUs.

Yeah, but can you really see ATi stopping selling graphics cards which are compatible with Intel boards/CPUs? Especially given the enthusiast market is currently buying up C2Ds over X2/FX chips....

Very true - really naive of me actually! If the market is there for C2Ds, I suppose A(MD/Ti) would be mad to draw out of making cards that are fine with Intel CPUs and Mobos.

For the time being though they have some catching up to do in the high end graphics arena - that 8800GTX is gunna be hard to beat

Natuarally I don't expect 8800 power in a laptop though. For the MacBooks and even the Pro models I guess there is no need for particularly high gaming end cards. The Radeons have been serving the Macs fine for a long while now so I guess there is no major need to change.

TBH, I'd prefer to see a higher screen res. rather than higher end graphics card. Most people wouldn't buy a Mac laptop to game on anyway, but they might appreciate a bit more definition for working with photos etc....

Generally they wouldn't but I've been really impressed with the results I've had from boot camp.

For a cheap portable they are great.
But why would anyone get a macbook as a desktop replacement? That isn't what they are for, thats what the macbook pro is for Plus the macbook is only 700quid (649 with HE discount)..

700 notes?!? Where? Apple show them as 749 so 700 is a great price!

mine cost me £702 with a gig of ram from the education store. had it a month now and love it. the only problem is photoshop and nikon capture are a little slow compared to my windows machine, but apparently that's due to them both being written for ppc not intel?

I wouldn't completely use it to game (spore.. ahem), but from using AutoCad on my windows pc, it was my graphics card that really sped things up - not the CPU.

This is of course getting a Pro as opposed to a standard MacBook (which i believe have integrated intel do they not?). I'm going to get one in a couple of years (yes i like planning in advance - gotta raise 2k somehow) for uni, so a decent gpu would be nice.

you can drop the price by loads if you pick all the crap options, etc. (plus the ed discount)
