I'm not discounting what he's saying, but diesels drive differently to petrol so although it may have more torque, other characteristics will affect it, and his opinion that it's "faster" may have been from a 20mph roll in 3rd gear for e.g

Its physically impossible their current gear is the same without one of them slipping somewhere. For an engine to be developing more power with less torque it must be spinning faster.
