Torque is relevant to everyday none thrashing driving. It's no use a car having bucket loads of power if it's all up in the high rev range because on normal roads you just don't drive like that unless you have no consideration for noise pollution.
Another great thing about the torque of deisels if you drive a manual is the lesser need for gear changes when you loose speed.

noise pollution
I love having a n/a engine that power kicks in at 5k, its the fun of it
Rave's right on this pointlessly being impressed by turbocharged engines having more torque than some high revving N/A engine. Its like being impressed that Honey tastes so much more sugary than salt.
Funnily enough, I also have an A-level in physics, though my grades were not as good as his.
For calculating how fast a car can accelerate when the gearbox is used properly, using torque generated by the engine is pointless. Any modern car's acceleration when working through the gears will reflect the peak power output of the engine far more than the peak torque output.
Of course, to get an accurate figure, you will need to see either the power or torque curve but what started this argument is someone being impressed by a turbocharged engine having a higher torque figure than an N/A engine.

Right, I've driven both. The diesel is faster. It has loads more torque. That's why. The figures kinda speak for themselves. The gearing CANNOT make up for a 100lbft difference... Trust me.
I, also, have an A level in physics. and maths. and chemistry. but this is about torque, not my CV.
I have a MCSE - Microsoft Certified Silly EEjit!
As for the 335i - Twin turbos on an I6 - best combination around IMHO but then I am biased.
As for the 335d - best diesil engine around. Twin sequential turbos :smitten:
Now - i wonder what twin sequential variable vane turbo's would be like on a I6????
Butuz
so much testosterone going off in this thread
So why do they stil get such a slating then?
they make good cars!!
1st thing that springs to mind is when the water hose blows at the back of the straight 6 engine meaning i have no bloody skin left on my right hand and most of my right arm...
bloody bmw's lol
