go on elephant and start getting some quotes. most people on here aren't going to know the insurance rating of an old civic off hand are they.
If you get a quote through elephant you can just change the car and see how they cash differs

They're about group 5-7 which wouldn't be so bad if you'd been driving a couple of years, but for your first car you want group 1-2 which means a small, 1.0-1.3l car

From my own investigating admiral and bell are about the cheapest for inexperienced and little to no ncb drivers, largely thanks to the 10 month policy they offer

there is about 3 cars in the world that are in group one, one of which is a fiat panda..
tbh you should be looking at cost of cars from elephant , its not ALL done on engine size, but try not get sucked in going for the 1.2 instead of the it it really makes no difference they are all direly slow so you may aswell get the cheapest
I doubt you'd get insured on a Civic. They're like Golfs, you'd think they'd be alright on insurance, even a low end one, but they just aren't.
Make sure you get on the blower for insurance, though, don't just rely on Internet quotes. I did a bit of browsing last night on the Insurance search sites, cheapest was £1600. One of the other companies on that list was £1800 but they phoned me today, since I was bored I did a "full quote" and the guy said he'd do it for £1200. YMMV but having a human to barter with rather than a computer database certainly helps.
Just need to buy a car now.
Sounds good. I'll try some online quotes for now
but the internet is the fastest way of getting an idea, and you sure as hell cant barter with some of these bigger insurers espec when its your first year
Golfs aren't to bad to be fair, but they are popular cars so they are more than the skoda equivilent

yeh your right howard, but theres about 3 you would want to be caught in..
He is right too, a saxo vtr is group 8 i think v similar to a 2l focus and you know the saxo is a LOT more expensive for young drivers due to the people that drive them..
I'm in a pretty similar situation (although 3 years older).
I've been looking at the Seat Ibiza, basically a Polo but a fair bit cheaper ... what you guys recon? A 1.4 SXE can be had for under £1k and thats got most of the toys

They're mechanically pretty much the same as a polo which means pricey parts but if you're looking a one under a grand then it's probably a good few years old and the build quality back then wasn't vw standard.
I've a friend who's had a 1.0l corsa since he passed and they're group 1. Slow as hell above 50 but it's a none too shabby first car, not got the noddy looks of a micra, fuel economy close to a deisel but with low insurance and tax and mechanically pretty tough and there are loads available under a grand.

Not too keen on the Corsa. What about golf or polo?
Ha classic your SOOO concerned about image right now, but dont worry it happens to everyone..
Regarding the golf what model were you looking at? i had a mk3 and i quite liked it, however it didnt handle at all, and wasnt cheap to insure for what it was.
polo, mate has a 1.4cl as does a girl i know, mates one seems solid and goes for ever..
What is it you dislike about fiestas and corsas if not their looks/image?
