    Recommend me a car £600-800

    Hey,

Right, i've just started taking my lessons and am working through the summer to save up for my car. Actually, I've got the money now but want some spare for more lessons and stuff.

Anyways, I'll be turning 18 in november so bare that in mind. This will be my first car so needs to be cheap to run, looks good and the insurance! I dont want to be paying more than £75-£100 a month.

    Any suggestions, £600-800 budget

    Thanks

I was in same situation, at 17 though, and i bought a 1995 fiesta

went ok, cheap to fix, didnt look too bad. I then had a 94 clio which was fine too both within budget and are good to get you about for a while, and small so its easy to gain parking skills ect

Edit you should be able to get the newer shape fiesta for the higher end of your budget, same kind of thing just looks better

I don't think you're in a price range and experience where you can be picky about what you would like.

Fiesta's and Micra's are the best cars in that price range with low insurance groups. They aren't desirable but they'll get you through your first couple of years at minimal cost.

I'd avoid a polo, the vw badge puts the price above it's real value, much better to go for a Skoda Felicia, pretty much the same car but about 2/3 the price and often owned by older folk with low mileage.

Fiesta's are the cheapest car to have repairs on and have very tough mechanics. They're cheap used buys because there are so many of them, handle well and you will always be able to sell it on in a couple of years.

The micra isn't as cheap to have work done on, but they are incredibly reliable, and not usually driven by aggressive drivers. They're cheap because they look like noddy cars but for your first car you aren't exactly dressed to impress in anything.

I'm about to get a car in a similar price range and I've plumped for a 1.25l mk4 fiesta, probably an LX or maybe a Zetec.

As for insurance being less than £100pm that could be tricky. First car, newly qualified and male means silly premiums. Sticking your mum on as a named driver will bring it down maybe even by £200, but you could be looking at a lot of money still. Admiral and maybe some other companies do bonus accelerator schemes where you only get a 10 month premium but you earn your no claims discount quicker. A pass plus could also significantly reduce your premium.

I was thinking of putting my dad as the first driver, he's got roughly 10 years no claims bonus and has been driving for 40 years now, also, can put my bro as second driver, again 5 years no claim and 7 years of driving. Would that help?

With your dad as a named driver, You'd still be very lucky to get less than 100 a month. More so if you actually pay monthly ( they charge extra for that, normally ).

His NCB's won't count on another policy, NCB's are for one policy only - you can however, have more than one 'set' of NCBs. So you could have 2x 4 years if you insured 2 cars for 4 years for example.

You will ge totally shafted for your first few years of driving, but if you are careful and don't have a smash - the insurance cost will go down very, very quickly.

There's no need to have two named drivers, a woman is the best way to bring the price down though your dad should also make it cheaper.

A pass plus course will make it cheaper, I think it counts as a no claims bonus but check with your insurer because some don't acknoledge it. Also it may be worth getting the car now and having lessons in it. Learner insurance is far cheaper than when you pass. A friend of mine did this and she passed after 10 months, her insurer changed the policy for the remaining two months without any charge and she then had a no claims bonus along with her pass plus, I think her first full premium for a Ford Ka was £600.

Pass plus won't count if you have some one else as the named driver, though.

    edit... I mean policy holder!

Not at the end of the year it won't be - my license restriction is up, so 600 here I come

(oh, and this year is my second year of my own insurance, and I've only spend £1000 on insurance over the two years, compared with some ludicrous amounts for first year insurance. I was quoted £2200 on a 1.4 Saxo...)
