There is no right or wrong way to sell your car. You have obviously thought about the options yourself. I sold my last one with some "for sale" signs taped to the windows, free advertising and it soon sold too. Good luck.
Depends what kind of car it is. I'm just about to sell my car(Golf GTI Mk3) and will try the internet first. There's this site http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/ which is pretty good, but like you said, anything on the net is limited coverage.
However, if you have a car that has an enthusiast community, it might be worth posting on some forums because a lot of them have for sale forums. I'm a member of a few golf forums and will also try my luck there.
The advantage of autotrader is you will usually be able to get a little more for your car than an enthusiast site because they know more about what the particular models are worth. I'd be inclined to just use all the free internet services for a couple of weeks if you're in no rush and go to Autotrader if you have no luck.
Selling on ebay has been quick and easy for me.
I advertised my Audi on Auto Trader about 4 times, no joy, then paid a company who supposedly had 'buyer's for my car', but lost out £70 and never heard anything! In the end I stuck it on e-bay, and within 2 days someone bought it for the buy it now price.
Sold my MX-5 no probs on e-bay too. Pretty cheap and good audience range, unlike the Auto Trader which only advertises in your area unless you pay more to extend the area of your ad. More room for description and pics on e-bay too.
Hope this helps.

Autotrader's not expensive, it's only £18 for two weeks on the website. My car sold on the day I advertised it!
Jon A - That's a well known scam, the autotrader equivalent of a 419.
I sold my Lotus Elise to a specialised dealer, got a very good price.
I could have gone for the option of putting the car on their forecourt for a small percentage of the selling price but decided the cash price was good enough.
As already stated, it depends what your selling. I have also used part ex in the past with Fords who gave a very good deal.
