Just looking on the bay of e's and they seem to shift for little money. Omega still tops the list though, with a Mk1 Passat close second I think.

Omega has the potential to provide you with rather large bills - in 2001 I think it was, at the height of production, the most attended to car broke down at the side of the Autobahn in Germany by ADAC was.. an Omega.

Oops yep soz I did mean E34.
E39 would be ideal but way too expensive unless it's been battered. The scruffy looking 100k+ mile E34 525i we saw for £1k last week suggests a tidy (+£1k) 525TD (+£1k for diesel) should be within reach, especially if it's a saloon and not a mega-popular touring.

Not a Beemer lover? Fair enough, neither am I. That particular model was one of the cars that started the diesel revival of the last 10 years or so. It was also built better than the current crop.
You're right the W124 is a Merc, the legendary one with the million mile potential and hewn from solid feel. I'm not suggesting a recent E-Class, partly because your budget doesn't allow and partly because you're right about the quality.
You obviously know your Audi's
The 740D was simply because they're so rare over here and the ealiest opportunity to get a modern 4l diesel in the UK. Besides it'll be LHD so probably out of the question n e way.
Makes me wonder if you can find an imported old S-Class Merc instead
I've never driven an S60 but I'm certain they're in a different league to my family's old 740 & 960. I guess an S80 ain't up for it either then

There are absolutely NO build quality issues with the Mercedes W124. It hails from a time when Mercedes Benz really did build the best cars in the world, no questions asked. There is a reason why a good W124 is worth more more money than the equivilent E Class - the car that replaced it.
It was just THAT damn good.
The A6 is nicely built but shares the Volvos trait to handle like a canal boat. Most cars of this size do.

And how does an s60 d5 handle like a barge?
Good mate of mine had a s80 d5 and it was a great car. and obviously alo larger than the s60 ad it went round corners very well imo
Had a play in a 2.2 Omega today and must say it was very impressive, good handling and that engine is very willing. Not sure if she'd like it though.
Taking on board some other suggestions, it was a friend who said the S60 was a bit boat like so will check it out myself. Compared to the Landie they all handle like caterhams though
