Parallel parking, probably because I don't do enough of it.

Glad I'm not the only one. I'm fine reverse parking in a car park (because I can see where the front needs to be) but when parallel parking there's always a huge gap.

Reverse parallel parking - hated it during my driving lessons & test and I still can't do it!

Re: An element of driving you're rubbish at.

I got the van into a space once that I couldn't get out of again.. had to wait for the chap in front to move his car...

What I am rubbish at tho, is driving passengers about (or so they say) and I can't park normal cars either - I have no idea why. Maybe it's because I can see out of the back too much or something..

Re: An element of driving you're rubbish at.

    As stated that's threshold braking.

Cadence braking is where you're trying to recreate ABS (or should that be ABS is recreating Cadence braking?) by repeatedly applying the brakes as quick as possible when you feel a wheel lock up. Obviously ABS does it a lot, lot quicker than you can mind. Quite a useful technique to have in your motoring arsenal though.

ah, just got the terminology wrong - I know what I mean

Never tried Cadence Braking on the motorbike - mainly because the gaps I leave and the awareness I've gained through advanced rider training have meant threshold braking gives me a sufficient ability to stop

    Could be interesting though...

Pulling away smoothly and slowly when my car's cold. The clutch just doesn't like it.

Also the first time I get in a new, longer, car I forget the wheelbase is longer and brush the inside rear tyre on the curb at speed.

I suffer from LFB as well I'm afraid. Weird thing is I'm not left-handed but I'm left footed when it comes to sports and stuff so that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it

I'll never forget the look on my brothers face when he saw I was using my left foot for breaking while slowly backing up the driveway in reverse lol

Heel and toe, partly because of the pedal positions and partly because I am not , contrary to my early thoughts, Derek Bell.

I can get it right a lot of times, but I don't half do some rubbish downchanges sometimes :S

Re: An element of driving you're rubbish at.

LFB / Heel 'n toe is something else I cannot do.
I'm fine if there's a huge pedal box and only 2 pedals.
Otherwise I'm stuffed because my feet point outwards meaning I have to turn my left leg inside-out to get near the brake!

Re: An element of driving you're rubbish at.

I am crap at the following:

Pulling out at T junctions where the road that I am on is at an acute angle to the road I'm joining. I struggle badly to see over my shoulder, through my car's rear quarter window, to the road I'm joining. I struggle because, having done that, I then have to whip my head back to look the other way, and the curtain airbags are in the way on the A pillars, and several times I've been pulling away when I've THEN seen the bloke coming down the road. It IS my fault, I'm struggling to improve that re focus of my brain and eyes from back left to front right and back left again, over and over while seeing the road is clear. I actually avid that junction if possible by going a longer way around.

I am bad at judging speeds of motorbikes and now have to presume that they're doing mach3, cos they are ALWAYS going quicker than I think and I can't get it right. So far, luckily I've not got in anyones way dangerously, but it would only be a matter of time. Sure, the bikes are travelling illegally fast, but they still don't need me pulling out in front of them. I cant judge their speed for some reason, but I get cars/vans etc dead right. Dunno why. Size of the bike I think.

Re: An element of driving you're rubbish at.

Motorway slip roads are interesting for me, I tend to forget how quickly this car can accelerate so I end up having to break the moment I join a motorway to avoid driving up the person in front's ass.

Also busy town junctions with many lane roundabouts, I struggle to comprehend how lane marking magically move when going round these junctions and often find myself in the wrong lane, doh! But I do find parallel parking easier than going in forwards, it just feels more natural.

I have that problem and my car has an 83bhp power defecit over a 330i! The problem is people dawdle. 30mph onto a =>50mph motorway is epic fail. I'm usually doing the speed limit by the time I'm ready to merge in if there isn't some cretin infront of me not paying attention

I can't parallel park. It's for this reason that I completely avoid driving in London because I'd never get anywhere to park (short of leaving my car in the middle of the road!)

I remember on my driving test it took me 10 minutes to complete that maneauver!
