where to drive like a loon?

ok, so everytime i see someone driving like a loon, i.e. top gear presenters, ken block, youtube videos, it always leaves me wishing i had somewhere to go to hone in on those type of powerslides and drifting techniques... but i dont want to pay the overly expensive "red letter days" prices just to be able to go somewhere to drive like a loon (not actually driving like a loon, but learning to handle the car by pushing it to and past its limits)...

does anyone know of any places wher eyou could go to learn these skills thats not too expensive...

track days seem to be way too formal, and it would be dangerous to try what i want to try with people driving racing lines etc...

i just wanna get the back end out on my car and learn to control it safely and not on public highways

    any information appreciated

Re: where to drive like a loon?

Quite a few companies, offer "drift days" now at various tracks around the country. Similar pricing and set up to a normal track day but the marshals will encourage you to get the tail out rather than asking you to leave for it

for the record, it's still illegal unless condoned as an official motor sport event.

Even if you OWN the field/airstrip that you're hooning around on, you can be prosectued for dangerous and reckless driving.

That's why small motorclubs don't run AutoTests as often as we used too. We used to just grab a field from a farmer/mate, get some old part exchanged cars, and some traffic ones, set up a course and time each other.

Can't do it now.. need an MSA licence for the event

Does that still ring true if it isn't a road vehicle?

    i.e. homebuild buggy?

If you've got the cash there appears to be an event going on in Edinburgh for you to thrash your car up a (normally) live runway !

it certainly does. And it counts for Mini Bikes etc

Even if yuo own the field, and surround it with fences to stop people walking in,, in theory the Old Bill can still prosecute for Dangerous or Reckless if it's not an official motor sport event.

what car do you drive? lots of owners clubs organise trackdays at old RAF bases and such, all legal and marshalled, and don't cost too much.

I dont think i quite explained myself... i know i said drift... but im more interested in learning to powerslide and push the car whilst going quick, rather than just donuts and wrecking my tyres

an all out drift day isnt really what im after... i want to go fast and sideways, but not necessarily both all the time
