well.. after much struggling the radio is out... just the cage to go.. i cant see where the bolt is holding the cage in... there are a couple of connectors which are helping to keep the cage firmly stuck in the car (ie one for the aerial, and three for stereo stuff) but i dont know what to do... i might try to find a specific vauxhall/astra forum and see if they can help me aswell

ok.. crappy picture of the inside of the cage :

where's the bolt? that thing at the back seems to be a thing for a cable-tie.... how much would it cost to take it into town and someone remove the cage and fit the stereo? i'm thinking it might be worth it cos i just am completely inept!

Looks very similar to my mates (ex)Corsa the securing bolt would be the screw in the middle with the black ring round it.

Then if I remember correctly the cage comes out and the connectors clip off the back of the cage. One of the connector blocks will be power, one speakers, and the other the display panel. The cage might also have some bent metal clips round the front edge holding it in, I seem to remember his being quite bent out out of shape once we got it out, although it did bend back easily enough.

If you want to get it done somewhere, ring them and ask first, i'd say £20+

Your almost there mate, dont give in now

as Barakka says the securing bolt is that screw in the centre of the pic all the other connectors will pop out of the cage once u have pulled it out. There should be enough slack in the cables for you to pull the cage all the way out with those cables still attached. Than all that is left to put the new cage in, it is most likely isn't a full one like the vauxhall one so you won't have to worry about the retaining screw just fold the tabs downto keep it in. You will have to check that the wiring is the same for you new headunit as your old one, from memory the power leads are in a slightly different order in the vauxhall headunits to standard ones, to fix this you can either swap the pins around to match or buy a new harness. Unless you are using a vauxhall radio to replace it then you wont need the bottom of those three connectors either as that is for the display.

.. thing is, i dont think its a screw (well i cant work out how to unscrew it if it is.. its kinda like a phillips screwdriver (ie like a screwdriver rather than the screw head).. might have another attempt in a minute.. its just frustrating and my hands are too big! arg!

Is it not like a computer case screw? With Phillips head and also shaped like a bolt? If you can't undo it with a screw driver can you get a socket in there with an extension?

its plastic... i'm sure its only there to act as a cable tie because there is a string of plastic cable tie stuff attached to it... i've just spent another 15mins out there, i've managed to move the 'right' side of the cage about 1mm fowards and cut my hand up loads cos its so sharp... i really am getting pissed off with the stupid thing!
