How do you buy a car from ebay or Autotrader etc?

This might sound like a stupid question, but I've only ever bought a car from a garage and a friend has just asked me for some advice.

So how do you go about it? What about insurance to drive it away?

This isn't going to be an expensive car, probably a little £500 run about at the most.

    Thanks muchly

As far as I know, much like you'd buy from anywhere else. You bid and win (or buy at BuyItNow), then arrange to collect. And if you're driving it, you need insurance or you're committing an offence ... and with all the vehicle-mounted NPR cameras, one you stand a decent chance of getting caught for if you take a risk.

what about if you go to see it, then decide you like it and buy it there and then?

do you arrange insurance before you go? get a generic policy for a couple of days that will cover you regardless?

after all, you could be going to see a half dozen cars that day...

As I understand it, most insurance policies will cover another driver for third party damage. So you'll have a minimum of cover when you go to test drive the cars. If you choose to buy it, you'll need to have your own insurance cover it.

Well you rarely go with a wad of cash just to look at the car.

    1. First look at the car, do the deal , leave a deposit.
    2. Go home, get the money from bank etc, ring insurance.
    3. Return with the money and drive the car away, fully insured.

With ebay you should arrange to view the car before auction end,
as bidding/buying on ebay, then turning up and deciding not to buy will cost the seller money
(and hurt your ebay account at well..)

Yeah, all the usual problems. I was talking to a friend just now (Rebel) and he mentioned a couple of points :-

    - some garages will provide a short-term (few days, maybe a week) insurance, specifically to get you home and give you a chance to sort your own insurance.

    - get a timed and dated receipt. If anything happened with the car (like speeding) before you picked it up, it saves arguments over who owned it if the receipt has a time.

Also (about Salazaar's point), apparently, some (maybe many) insurance policies limit their coverage of cars (not owned by or under rental agreement) to cars that have valid insurance already in effect. For instance, if I have two cars, A and B. A is insured in my name only, but B is off-road and not insured, it may be that your third-party cover covers you to drive A but doesn't cover you to drive B.

Last time I bought a car, I spoke to the insurer in advance of collection, and they issued me a temporary cover note covering the one I was buying, If I bought it. They didn't charge me, but some might.

Either way, it's up to you of course, but personally, I don't feel inclined to risk taking a chance. So I make sure I'm covered.

The issue wasn't about whether to get cover or not, it was really about how best to go about it

Re: How do you buy a car from ebay or Autotrader etc?

Double check on the insurance with the insurance company. When you hand over the cash the car becomes yours, the previous owners insurance, and any insurance you hold on another car will not cover it. Most companies will offer to cover 2 vehicles for a 24hr period, gives you time to pickup new car, but still be insured on the old.

As to the actual buying. Look for new adds on ebay, spot a car you like, go around to look and test drive (check insurance as to what it covers), then decide wether to make a cash offer (remember they can pull it from ebay and save fees), or bid. A friend just tried a cash offer, which the owner refused, but won it on ebay at a cheaper price. As I said above, look at new auctions not those about to finish, gives time to have a proper look at the vehicle.
