£100 Car for the Scally Rally

Hi all,

I came across the 'Scally Rally' website a coupld of days ago and the 'Artic' rally looks awesome fun!!

The rules state you can only spend £100 on the car (more on getting it through MOT and extras if you want).

So, in short, what would you suggest for £100?

Manual is a must really, Diesel would be ideal but not the end of the world if it's a petrol (just cost more) reliable is a must though!

Can't go wrong with a Ford Mondeo, you'd get a high millage mark 2 for that money so you could travel in comfort with high reliability Other cars I can think of would include the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta.

Mondeo is probably the winner so far....

Are there any large estates or 4x4's that would be available for that kind of money, I don't mind spending a few £000 fixing any minor issues etc... the rules state the car cant cost more than £100 but you can spend money on it afterwards!

I'm thinking i'll just sleep in the back =D

If you can pick up an ~ P reg Rover 414 for £100 anywhere get one, they are fantastic cars, very reliable as long as you make sure the cooling system isn't leaking and pretty economical as well. As Madduck says, Honda engine will make you happy

Please note that the Mondeo 1.8 TD engine is atrocious in the long term reliability. If you're buying diesel at that price have a good listen for bearings that are on the way out. Not *that* great on fuel either.

Sounds awesome... I'll have to consider that in a few years if I can get some smaller rallies under my belt!!

Good job you have a mechanic who can sort the car before you go at least, me and my friend know next to nothing... I'll be throwing some tools and a haynes manual for whatever we buy though!!

I'll donate on your page when I get home as well, if there was ever a worthy cause that is it my friend!

When i said granny, I was thinking Granada at the time. If you can pick a V6 or early 2L up they do generally refuse to die, although the majority of them will be Auto, it's a pretty robust box all in all.
