    Good sites for car reviews/news?

Can anyone recommend any good (free) websites to read car reviews and news etc? My favourite used to be 4car but they closed at the end of last year. Parkers is good, but tends not to carry much news or review new cars all that quickly. Autoexpress has a terrible website and quite stingy reviews.

    Cheers,

Re: Good sites for car reviews/news?

The problem is that most are biased due to advertising revenue.

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/

But his reviews often dont tanke into considertion running costs. A car may be better, but that £500 a year servicing will hurt etc. Eg Honda Jazz, fab car, not to cheap to run/fix.

What car are you looking at as the best reviews tend to be from people who own one.

I'm not looking for a specific car - I go to Parkers and forums for that as I'm never interested in something younger than 5 years! It's just for general interest really.

Honestjohn is quite good, but like Parkers, doesn't seem to cover very many new cars (last test was 2nd decemeber I think?)

    I like http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/ myself

I recall top gear magazine has a very brief summary of a hell of a lot of new cars at the back of each magazine issue ...

    Dammit to late ....

Whilst there can be quite a lot of facts packed into the 'car by car' there's also an extraordinary amount of blatent errors and automotive hearsay on that site.

Also, it will inevitably result in you buying a Honda Jazz.

    No bad thing that

Parkers, Autocar and Honest John are my main references.
Parkers is useful for data (though not always right!)
Autocar for reviews because of the way they write and manage to avoid the pious nonsense of Autoexpress (and the terrible editing).
Honest John for recall info and what to look for when viewing a second-hand car for the first time. Though people tend to complain more than praise there it's usually easy to see through the nonsense to get a good feel for what trouble may lay ahead.

    Oh and here ofc!
Whatever it is there's a fair chance someone will have driven it or have second-hand knowledge of use

People need to remember that car reliabilty is linked to things breaking. The more complex the car is the more chance of things going kaput.

This tends to give an unfair advantage towards japanese or low end german cars.

    * used to work in the industry...

Also factor in cost of ownership. Ie never buy a Saab

So the Fiat Punto is a highly complicated sports car?

So can you explain why the 306 appears to have a failure rate 1000x higher than any other vehicle known to man?

I use whatcar.com every now and then but most of my research is done on a forum for the marque I want to learn about.

For up to the minute news, I read www.autoblog.com

Admittedly it is very American biased, but generally fairly good/light hearted journalism, and they're at every motor event.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but Pistonheads.com.

Good array of news, some reviews (owned by Haymarket) and quite lively forums. Every problem is solved by an MX5, and no car is faster than a 335d (mapped)
