    Free remap

    But only for 5 hours.

My Golf GTI is in to get a DAB aerial fitted, the place is an agent for Revo (i think thats the name) and they offered me a 5 hour trial of the MK5 GTI map, should take it from 200bhp to about 245 or something like that. Looking forward to it actually.

I'm off to Dundee this afternoon, so it's a perfect opportunity to give it a shot.

Not sure if I'll spend the £500+VAT on it though, there is a niggling thought about changing my car at some point.

    Re: Free remap

Be very, very careful. Revo imply that everything goes back to stock once the 5 hours has expired - that isn't the case. If you decided that you wanted to get a remap done elsewhere they would first have to reflash the ECU to stock before they could put their map on.

That said, I like Revo maps, I've had 2 in the past, 1 on a GT PD 150 and the other on my R32. Revo have a reputation for giving a digital throttle but that's fully adjustable from 0 - 10. I had the map on the R32 set to 6 I think and it suited me well.

I'd still have the Revo map on the R32 had I not had some other engine mods done that necessitated a full custom map.

The Revo map for the GTi is really nice, I've driven a few cars with the stage 1 map and 1 with the stage 2.

    Re: Free remap

Well if I do decide to get the full remap, it'll be the Revo as I like Checkpoint who are doing the work.

    Thanks for the input Burble!

I came to post the exact same thing as Burble.

Imagine a free trial of Norton - it installs nicely, works nicely but when you come to remove it, to install something else, oh boy!

    Re: Free remap

According to the guy at Checkpoint, the remap times out after 5 hours of driving, so it's still applied. Drove to Dundee and back which is just over an hour each way, so probably still got about 2 hours of it left. I was really surprised that my brother actually commented on it, he doesn't really drive but even he noticed the car way different.

The car feels smoother and is far more responsive, the extra torque is pretty amazing. It kind of feels like the difference when I first bought this one, replacing my MK4 GTI I was really surprised that my brother actually commented on it, he doesn't really drive but even he noticed the car way different. There is a section of the A90 that drops to a 50mph limit, staying in 6th you can still pull away at a respectable rate and back up to 70, normally it's sluggish or you have to drop to 5th ro actually accelerate well. At, erm, about 70, you can feel it surge if you plant the foot, that didn't happen before.

So, yeah, I'm really tempted to spend the money and get this full time, especially as the trial is only abut 75% of the full version. I just worry about the weather at the moment, I think once spring is fully here and there isn't a risk of snow. Although next year I'll have to get snow tyres without a doubt, the Golf will just have too much torque to get away with the ones I have atm, even now it's a bit iffy when it snows.

    Re: Free remap

It adds to the cost but you can buy a Select Switch which lets you enable and disable the performance map whenever you choose so when it snows you can knock it back down to 197bhp.

It's easy to do, turn the ignition off, plug the switch into the diagnostic port (near to the accelerator), turn the ignition on, wait for a beep, turn off the ignition, remove switch, wait a few seconds then start the car.

I don't know how much the switches cost, Revo were giving them out free when I got the R32 remapped by them.

Don't be under any illusion though that with the map set to standard the performance map is undetectable to VW - it isn't.

Be sure to wear a helmet - the Revo map usually ends in a Veyron chasing experience

if you do go for it permanently tell your insurance co. otherwise your policy is void ...
They'll probably increase your premium (some do, some don't).

My policy jumped over 50% from a remap so be aware of the additional costs.

    Re: Free remap

Some insurance companies are much more mod friendly than others. Elephant wouldn't cover me if I had my PD150 remapped but Admiral only wanted an extra £40 or so when the R32 had the remap.

I'm now insured with Greenlight who are very mod friendly - I've got all the mods declared and am paying a fait bit less than most companies quote for a standard R32.
