    Dehumidifiers for cars

Hey all, does anyone have any recommendations of dehumidifiers for use in a car. While the cabin is not too bad (the rear window gets a wipe down with paper towels every so often) the boot is ringing (almost on a daily basis at the mo) and the carpet looks as if it's starting to get some mould on it (though that's easily fixed) I though about using a dehumidifier to keep the overall water content of the air in the boot down a bit (or at least keep it to a level so that I don't get condensation you could bathe in).

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Fix the leak. Not the symptoms.

    ^ that

Check the boot lid seals and seals around the rear light clusters.

    What car is it?

    Re: Dehumidifiers for cars

That's the thing, there is no leak as far as I can tell, all the seals are in top order (they're regularly worked over, every three to six months, with olive oil, extra virgin , and petroleum jelly to keep them in shape and sealed). I'll have another look around the light clusters though just to make sure (and the car is a Rover 200 Coupe, pic's are in the car showroom).

Thanks for that but I've tried it, I've got packets of the stuff scattered all over the car (I got half a dozen sizeable packets of it when I bought a sword and stumbled upon a bottle of it when doing a bit of a clean out of the stores at work). While it's had some effect in the cabin (the rear window used to require a good old towelling down virtually every other day now it's more like a couple of times in the past two months, though the ice build up doesn't help) the boot is still swimming. Plan is at the mo is to get a plug in unit from a work colleague and give it a proper old run through the day (seeing as I park within a few feet of the nearest window I can get away with doing it at work).

It's the long term I'm currently pondering on. After doing a bit of searching I've stumbled across some stand alone absorption units at Amazon (generally marketed at caravans), anyone ever used these things? (the reviews are somewhat middling from don't work, don't buy to they're great!).

    Re: Dehumidifiers for cars

IIRC the Coupe has a sunroof? Chances are the drain holes (usually in each corner) are blocked causing the water to backup and spill into the boot.

There should be drainage tubes that run from each corner, down the A pillar/C Pillar and either out the car via the door jamb or wheel arches by way of a drain nipple.

If there's a rear wiper/washer check it works and the tube supplying the water hasn't come off and is filling the boot with water.

    Re: Dehumidifiers for cars

Thanks for that, yep it's got a T-bar sunroof, the rear washer does work, so there might just be the chance the drainage channels are blocked (especially due to the recent weather we've had, I had noticed that ice had built up in the rubber lip running around the seals of the sunroof so it could've done the same in the drainage channels). I suspect the rear ones (if they are there) could be running down under the rear window as there's a large lip running around the boot opening that's designed to catch any run off when opening the boot so they may have incorporated it into that (I have notice when washing the car that area can get rather badly silted up). I'll have to have the rubber strips that run down the front and either side of the window (the door jam drainage) and the two that lead back from the sunroof moved to get a proper look.

The only thing that's puzzling me is that there's no water in the spare wheel well (hence not giving a thought to a leak) and the way the water is quite literally everywhere and beaded just as I would have expected if it was condensation, I shall however have a good old nosey around just in case.
