To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
Peak oil is BS.
The high cost in the UK is a product of high taxation and the comparatively weak pound.
In 2007, petrol prices here were around the $2.50 a gallon mark (with some fluctuations). Right now they're about $2.70.
But that's for a gallon
So 3.8l (because of the silly American way of defining gallons)
so to get the same we're talking 3.8l * ~ 118p = £4.48 per American gallon, is what we're paying
$2.70 in £'s is £1.77 (XE.com) is what you're paying
So we're paying £2.71 (per 3.8litres) more than our American cousins
(i hadn't realised that it was *that* big a difference, i thought it was around £1.50 )
The difference is because of the tax, mainly.
We pay 18.4 cents per gallon in federal tax, 43.4 cents in state tax and 3 cents to the city of Eugene. The total is about a third of the price made from tax. Compared to two thirds(?) in the UK.

This is bunny and friends. He is fed up waiting for everyone to help him out, and decided to help himself instead!
Yep, it's no fun runnning a petrol station.
One I regularly go to, run by some pretty nice people, is next to a secondary school and they're terrified of school holidays as their profits just plumit. On petrol sales alone they could not survive as a business
The tax on fuel is just far to high, however, I'm worried that by now as a country we're not seriously working on alternatives. We should be heavily investing in nuclear power, and the infrastructure to support it and safely deal with the spent fuel.
Shush!!
Dont say nuclear power ffs...
But yes, I think we should go nuclear.
a question for everyone:
What is the point the price needs to reach before you guys think - I'm not using the car.
Years ago when it around 80p, people used to say £1.10 would be that point but when it got there people were using cars.
So yeah.. whats your breaking point? £1.50.. 1.70..£2.. £2.50 per litre... more.. drop a figure..
Maybe use the car less, drive more economically, never use a car, for me, never happen which is what the government are wanting, it doesnt matter how good public transport is, and where I am its not bad as far as number of buses running but the cost is probably more than getting in the car and driving and its not as convenient so people will always use the car where they can.
