    Cutting polish

I have a couple of scuff marks that I think will polish out. Having heard dire things about T-cut - what very fine cutting polish do the HEXUS body repairers and paint experts recommend?

    Thanks.

    Re: Cutting polish

I use AutoGlym Super Resin Polish as the polish on my car - it can remove light scuffs etc, then if needed to cut deeper AutoGylm Paint Renovator, then Resin Polish over the top to protect it.

I've used T-cut in the past, but it seems very harsh. In this case the base coat of paint is covered by a clear lacquer, and I don't want to risk going through the lacquer

Hmm - the damage was caused by a garage door coming down on the boot lid. It looked awful to start with, but a lot of that was paint from the door, and Auyo-Glym polish removed that quite successfully - perhaps another application of the polish might help.

I had a Chips away guy look at it. He said he could probably sort it (one very small scratch is through to the primer) but he rang this morning and cancelled, saying he wasn't happy about doing a good job. Hi9s concern wasn't matching the paint, but feathering in the clear coat afterwards.

I have a nasty feeling I may have to have the whole top panel resprayed (or just live with it )

Don't use T-Cut ! I made the very big mistake once many years ago for thinking it was polish and went over the whole bonnett with it on a bright red car !

    Re: Cutting polish

Unfortunately if its through to the primer then it will require paint.
For the best results, take it to a car body specialist and they will blend that area in and clear coat the whole panel.
You could also get touch in paint, build up the area with a few layers and cut back with polishing wet/dry paper (1500 - 2000 grit).
If you do this method have lots of washing up liquid & water on the panel/paper to ensure you polish & not scratch the paint.

What I don't understand is why they can't get a colour match on the paint?
Is the car a specialist paint job ie pearl, candy etc.

    Re: Cutting polish

He (the guy from Chips away) said he can get a match on the [paint, it is feathering in the clear coat that he is not happy with and thinks it will show. The scratch through to the primer is about 2cm long and is just a scratch. the rest of the damage is just a scuff. I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it if it comes out.

I was impressed with the Chips away guy for refusing to do a job a couldn't guarantee the quality of - but they are franchisees, so I may try another. His quote was around £120 - I did go to another small paint shop who quoted £225 (+ VAT) for the same sort of work (paint the affected area and feather in the clear coat without respraying the top of the boot.

    Re: Cutting polish

When I have wanted a small repair, they have only painted the affected area & then clear coated the full panel so it will blend in.
As for price, £120 sounds about right but £265 sounds like they are pricing themselves out of a job.

    Re: Cutting polish

The £265 was from an independent repairer - I think I'll try the other C A franchise in the area.

    Re: Cutting polish

As you said previously, each of these repair companies are franchises (chips away) etc.
If you look around, there maybe someone who will be more confidant in carrying out the work.
I was recommend a man in a van by my local dealer.

You could try local dealerships - bear with me before assuming the worse - I put a ding in a BMW I drove, contacted my local Toyota dealership (what I drive), who use a local guy for body repairs. Nice chap with own workshop did a spotless job.

Good idea - some of the local garages may outsource to a specialist. I have thought about taking to the dealership, so I guess no harm in trying.

    Re: Cutting polish

I called into my local car repair place today (wanted to chat about my new case build).
I asked what would be the correct way to repair such a scratch and they confirmed, paint area & clear coat panel.
I also asked about price, £120 -140 depending on paint colour.
I also said about the price you had been quoted (£265). We both thought that someone was taking the mick.
The only explanation that we could come up with, was your car is dipped in 24K gold.
