Only on the Autobahn, otherwise no, I don't. If you're late/in a rush - leave earlier. There's no reason to speed, imo. Call me a do-gooder, but the laws are there to be abided by, not to just turn around and say "Oh.. I was only driving 15-20 mph over the speed limit! It's nee bother!"

How fast do you drive on a motorway?

How fast do you drive to overtake a lorry / hgv / caravan?

The national speed limit for the motorway (unless otherwise stated) is 70MPH, iirc, so I'm quite happy to sit at that, weather/traffic permitting.

The speed of the vehicle in front of me will define whether I am to overtake or not. If a HGV is travelling at 70MPH, why should I overtake it? However, if it is travelling significantly slower than this, I will overtake.

I can see your point, of course - you were overtaking. Increasing speed slightly is part of overtaking, however 85MPH is excessive in my opinion. Perhaps not yours, or others.

Your questions do not, however, justify speeding.

    Tom....you're safe.....Im sure of it.

You'd have been well tugged straight away.

90% chance you're safe as houses...they are pulling the top speeders, and they take chase of need be.

85 mph on 95% of motorways is acceptable my almost every policeman everywhere.

    Dont fret.
You pretty sure it wasn't some kind of Gatso camera or nethin then? Just wondered what it would have been really then cos it was obviously detecting speeders in some way! Would it have taken a photo?

    Your correct, 70mph unless indicated.

I dont intend to justify speeding, I dislike people who speed. However, I see no reason for that speed camera to be on that bridge. The road is straight, visibility is good, dry weather, ~85mph is perfectly adequate for the road conditions, along with everyone else.

I am not saying I am a sheep, as at numerous points along that road the speed dropped to 50mph, I always always, without fail, drop to the indicated speed, no matter what speed other drivers were doing.

However, I feel at times that it is unsafe to travel at 70mph in certain situations. At the particular point in time which I noticed the patrol car, a bunch of cars had gathered close together in one or two of the three lanes, this is totally unsafe, and could cause a pile up.... so I went out into the fast lane and overtook them, so I had clear road ahead of me...

I see no wrong in what I did, I was avoiding a potential accident, if one of the cars infront of the bunch had of braked we would have had a nasty accident to deal with.

Don't get me wrong, I hate people who speed in villages, near schools, or even in residential areas when children are likely to be about... however I don't (along with 70% of people) think that speed cameras are the answer.

I can't justify why i was doing 85, I know that. I was doing that speed merely for the fact i wanted to get home quicker because it was a 6 hours journey and after 4 hours on the road you begin to get a little hacked off. The car was totally under my control, not that this is an excuse...

...What can i say. I really hope i don't get caught, but if i did i would have to take the rap...but i would still consider it very unfair considering the amount of people you see tonning it past you all the time.

I admit, I'm one of those people thats constantly tonning it on the motorway, but you need to be aware of your surroundings before you do those speeds. I commute once a week back and forth from Brum to Cardiff, so I take the M5, then the M50, A449, and then the M4, all around 1am so I maybe spot less than 20 cars on the whole journey. And if you know the M50 and A449, its just one big long speedtrack.

Before I bought the Road Angel, I got caught in successive weeks doing 106mph and 91mph on the A449. Both of them are other 3 months old now, and I didn't get any summons or fine. When I ended up buying the Road Angel , the guy that sold it to me lives opposite the regional head that deals with traffic speeding, and it was this head's advice that you throw away the letter, as 9 times out of 10, they won't be botheres chasing up on you and you get off scott free.

dude, i wouldnt worry too mkuch bout it. Normally the ones on the bridge are notifying there mates a mile down the road, which car to pull over.

And yeah, you have 14 days to receive a ticket. I returned one i received that was dated after 14 days of the event saying that its past the two weeks and nothing further came of it
