    Question Have i been caught?

    Hi all...

Driving back from holiday in Cornwall today with me and my m8 in the car. Anyway driving along the M5 doing the normal routine of following traffic and mingling between speeds of 70 - 90.

We came over the peak of the hill and the road straightened out to a very long straight bit of the Motorway, i was in the Outisde line doing somewhere around 85 - 89 but no way over 90. My m8 as passenger then shouted 'Slow i can see Police' and as i looked i could see...roughly 500/600 metres in the distance a patrol car sat above the traffic.

I hit the breaks and slowed to 70 very very quickly and moved to the middle lane...we then proceeded under the bridge where they were and i saw 3 policeman, the patrol car and what looked like some gun [it was hand-held.]

Whats the probability i have been done for speeding here? I was following other cars around me and moving past another car in the middle lane who was close to my speed also.

The journey back from holiday had 2 other cars full of my mates including Nick (Lead) from here who was driving his car. I think he was roughly doing the same from what he told me...

Any suggestions or is it just a case of sitting tight and waiting 2 weeks?

    Thanks

    Tom

If it was a hand held detector, then they are often looking about 500m+ away with it, so there is a chance you got caught. Then again, if you were doing an indicated 85, that would probably make actual spped only around 80mph, so i don't think they would have got you.

Think it might be a matter of sitting tight for two weeks and seeing what happens.

2 weeks? The police have up to 3 months to send you a notification of speeding.

I am 99.99% sure that a Notification of Intended Prosecution (NIP) is a 14days wait (+3 days to allow for delivery).

I thought it was only the vans and gatsos etcetera that would catch you and you get a notice in the post.

With cops parked on bridges, there's normally another cop or two sat further down the motorway to get anyone that's been spotted.

Driving between Cirencester and the Gloucester M5 Junction there was a van in a layby and then further down the dual carriageway the cops had blocked off one lane and were diverting people into another layby - big scale stuff.

These are the sort of answers i have been getting asking around. It was definately a handheld piece of equipment, no tripod or stand, not hanging out of a van etc.

The guy was basically standing resting the gun on the bridge barrier. As I passed under the bridge I noticed he was shaking his legs setting position (like a sniper preparing to take aim).... so possibly he was only just setting up.

I also noticed that their was 3 police officers, and only one patrol car (T5 or similar estate car), one officer was using the gun, the other two had their hands on their hips facing the road on the bridge, not the road we were on, looking very bored.

Not that I enjoy sounding like an unwashed vagina, but if we all stayed within the speed limit, we wouldn't have to poo our pants every time a gatso flashes/we see a policeman.

I understand what you mean, but when you have had your license for less than 2yrs, you only get 6points until you lose it and have to re-take a 1.5hour strict driving test.

Me and Tom were both finishing an overtaking manouvere, hence pulling back into the middle lane.

he might...but he wont answer it now, will he?

    Tom....you're safe.....Im sure of it.

You'd have been well tugged straight away.

90% chance you're safe as houses...they are pulling the top speeders, and they take chase of need be.

85 mph on 95% of motorways is acceptable my almost every policeman everywhere.

    Dont fret.
