    Strange noise!

I have a strange noise coming from I *think* the back brake/brakes of my car (pug 205, they are drums on the back). It sounds like something is spinning and rubbing, yet isn't consistant. It was happening a while back, but then went away for a few months and recently started again after the heavy rain. The speed of the noise increases as i get faster and then clears at about 35 mph, but it doesnt always happen and the car can be fine. It can also sometimes start after coming out of a corner?

I plan to get it to a garage to get checked but if anyone has any idea what could be causing it please let me know?

    Cheers
    Col

the rear drum brakes are probably slightly sticking on....so they are either in need of cleaning out , OR loosening.

Cleaning out is most likely..the brake dust, plus rust dust, build up to stop the shoes from moving freely....they go ON with less efficiency and then dont come back off at all.

When you corner, you often brake simulataneously....so thats most likely.

Ah ok, is it worth taking to a garage to get this checked or is it a haynes manual type job?

if you have the desire to tae the wheels off, and you have a Haynes...have a look anyway

Loosen the wheel bolts, not off ..just loosen..

Jack it up.....take wheel off AND LIE THE WHEEL UNDER THE SILL JUST IN FRONT OF THE WHEEL ARCH.

Now, if the jack fails, the car will land on the rim, which stops you dying and stops the car getting damaged...

then, leave it IN GEAR so the fronts wheels are held, put a brick under the front tyres to stop it rolling, and then see if you can MOVE the drum....can you turn it.

Lets note it SHOULDN'T spin totally freely.....not even brand new cars will spin. They WILL spin with the wheel on them, cos it acts like a flywheel and holds the energy, but when a wheel is OFF the drum, it should move but not spin.

See what its like...but be warned.

DRUM BRAKES HAVE SHOES...the are banana shaped things with the brake material on the outside....the are pushed OUTWARD by a slave cylinder...when your foot goes down, the cylinder pushes apart....when there is no brake drum on, the cylinder CAN pop right out, so no pushing the brake pedal withoutt he drum on UNLESS THE MANUAL say to do it. Each is different.

If you feel brave and wanna just clean them out, WATCH FOR THE SPRINGS that hold the shoes together....they ping for MILES!!!!

The brake drum wil be FILLED with dust....dont inhale! Mechasnics used an easily evaporated spray liquid called ....ready?....BRAKE CLEANER!!!!! and it washes out the dust and then evaporates leaving black dusty mound on the floor.

The edges on the shoes sometimes need rounding off, and SOME DRUMS JUST WONT COME OFF< cos the shoes inside have eaten into the drum a bit, and left a LIP, an EDGE, and the shoes are inside it, holding it on.

    Up to you......

Yea, I have a haynes manual for the car so will have a look. When it did it (the noise) before we had the wheel off and could turn the drum. The torque wrench I have available doesnt go high enough to do the bolt up to hold the drum in place which needs 159 ft/lb's according to the haynes and my wrench only goes upto 140. I'll see if I can get hold of a suitable wrench and get the drum off.

    Thanks for the help.

I've had this on back and front. Back was just where they were dirty as per Zak's post; the drums were quite worn but the shoes were fine.

The front brake took me ages to work out; it was like a rattling noise almost like I was dragging something. It turned out to be the dust shield thing rubbing on the brake disk, easily fixed. I dunno if pugs have those but it might be worth getting the wheel off and taking a look m@ttz.

I have a rattling which seems to accelerate with the car but stops if I put my foot on the brake. could this be that dust shield thing?
The car is a 1984 mini city.
