    Scooter MOT

Someone stole my tax disc and my MOT runs out in like 2 weeks. Problem is, the forks have a few dots of rust on them and after you have been riding there is like brown streaks on it as if something has leaked out. They seem to work fine, but will it pass its MOT?

First link google came up with:

Apparently it's an MOT failure unless you fit fork gaiters.

Fair enough mate. In the long term though fork stanchions get more and more expensive to fix the longer you leave them, so it might be well worth your while replacing the fork seals and rubbing the stanchions smooth again (but only where they've rusted) with some wet and dry paper. Fill it with some fresh fork oil, then fit the gaiters and you should be good for another few years riding.

The difficulty of this job varies from bike to bike, but I didn't have much trouble doing it on my AR50 when I was 16, although getting the old seals out was a bit of a nightmare, they'd probably been in there since the bike was new! Once I'd levered them out with a massive screwdriver and some brute force, I was fine from there on.

I guess it'd probably take a competent mechanic an hour or less to do both, and the seals are cheap usually, so even paying someone to do it wouldn't cost a bomb.
