Smile vauxhall qs.. mostly for mr zak i guess :)

maybe this should be in the 'pit stop' bit but i dunno for sure...

anyhow onto the problems, my mum got her car serviced (mot etc) the other day, costing bout £230+, anyhow the mechanic left two problems with the car.
    1. the left (offside/nearside?) wingmirror is broken, he claims its £70 to get a new one (excluding putting the thing on, so prolly at least £100 all in)
    2. the back wiper doesnt work, which isnt good. he reckons that a pipe in the roof is gone (how does he know this?) and it'll cost at least £200 (again plus labour im guessing) to fix.

now mr zakky, is this reasonable (£70 for a wingmirror seems a tad excessive!).. oh and its a vauxhall astra mk3 incase you were wondering.. just wondered if you can get the bits cheaper / you have any ideas / info etc

edit : mirror for £15 on ebay?! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...490026022&rd=1

Scrapyard for the mirror, would expect around £10-15. FOr the washer can your hear the motor running when its triggered? If you can its probably a pipe (check the pipe wher possible), but on my previous car the pipe had just come apart at the top of the hatchback. Just had to push the 2 bits of pipe back together, lasted another 3 years. Another place to check for mirrors is ebay, picked one up for my landrover there.

My knowledge of car electrics is a little sparse as it comes from playing with my series landrover, it has a grand total of 2 fuses
Anyway with them most electrical problems come from either bad earths, buggered wires or knackered switches. Easiest way to check is using a multi-meter.
Never done a mirror on a vauxhall, but was damn easy on an old rover my dad had.

does the rear wiper not move at all ?

If not it MIGHT be the wires running to it in the boot lid, OR the motor, OR the fuses , but unfortunately it does happen. Sometimes people turn the rear/front wipers on in the weinter when the blades are frozen to the screen...and the motor burns out

Mirror....definately a scrap yard but fitting is not that easy.....the mirro itself is not too hard, although you have to pull the interior trim off (got a tweeter speaker built in) and it might need GLUING back on cos the clips often break.

If its electric...its more dough again.

    COlour coded?
