he's spending 40k on a car. two points you've missed...
i spent 10k on my bimmer. can i put disks n pads on it for £250? no. you're failing to take into account whether or not there is addition value in the disks n pads over the regular disks n pads you'd buy for a mk2 golf gti at £80 ish. the size changes the price. the materials... apples n oranges.
hes spending 40k on a car. hes well heeled enough to do that, hes probably not overly worried about a big bill for tyres or brakes. people who spend large on cars, tend to understand they're not going to service them at the cost of an old mini.
*shrugs* I prefer not to make an assumption about how the car is being financed so if he asks for low running costs I'll take that at face value. A Toyota GT86 is probably going to have lower running costs than a Porsche Cayman.
Long term update. Things were a bit delayed by me breaking my ankle so car shopping had to wait while that healed.
However today I got this fella:
Big smiles today, even though it rained all evening.
Nice, although the driver's seat appears to be wearing white sunglasses?
Very nice. Please let me know any comments about the ride quality and whether the dynamic suspension modes are any good (possibly considering an S1, which uses the same system as the S3 I think).
Looks beautiful, congrats.
That's an odd reflection of a house behind the car park I think.
Ride is good, noticeably better than my old A3 s-line. There's similar roll on corners (i.e. not much), but it's a lot softer over bumps which is a welcome change.
Not really tried the different modes - I stuck it on dynamic when I picked it up and haven't changed it yet.
I don't have magride fitted so can't say how much difference that makes.

Long term update: Poor car met its match last weekend, in the form of a wall.
Looks like I'm back in the car market, had a look at a GT86 the other day, they look very nice indeed, though I've not driven one yet.
Suggestion...
Stop buying fast cars and buy something exciting instead.
Out of curiosity, how much would your insurance be now, for the car you would want to replace it with? Get a second-hand Skoda Citigo. Group 1 insurance. The first model year cars are passing their MOTs without issues, so they seem to be reliable to far. They have built-in crash prevention technology - it's actually impossible to put down any power.
I have one. They're nice little runabouts.

Hope you're OK.
Golf R is out now, probably not enough of a change from the S3, but just thought I'd mention it. As suggested earlier, the 2 series are around now, and second hand 3 or 4 series might be on the cards?Looks like I'm back in the car market, had a look at a GT86 the other day, they look very nice indeed, though I've not driven one yet.
Such as?
Insurance on a cheap runaround isn't much cheaper than insurance on something more interesting. I quoted for a 1l Yaris, it's just shy of a grand, a GT86 only adds a few hundred on to that.
I am, 10/10 for driver safety in those Audis! Lots of airbags went off, I walked away with a few bruises.
Golf definitely too samey, I'm looking to get something a bit cheaper (not least since my insurance is now a bit pricey), so second hand, a couple of years old. Which I think rules out the 2 series.
