So the lesson really is to be always alert and try to expect the unexpected.
The thing is my mum was sitting in the passenger seat. If that car had not been able to brake in time, she would have been on the recieving sideof the impact.

BTW, I am starting to recall all those things I learnt in GCSE and A level Physics. Most of them were about cars and collissions hahaha. Newton's laws of motion, v=u+at.. S=D/t ... lol

And the important two for collisions are e= .5mv^2 so the kinetic energy of the car increases as the square of the speed,

And conservation of momentum, mv, so if a car weighing 1000kg travelling at 20 m/s (roughly 40 miles an hour) hits a stationary car weighing 500kg, some of that momentum will be transferred to the smaller car as an impulse, accelerating it very quickly.

The actual mechanics are quite complicated, because there is inertia, and rolling resistance, but if you are stationary in a line of traffic, and there is a car coming down on you and likely to hit you, release the brakes, and if possible have a little bit of coward motion to lessen the effects of the impact. One reason why you shouldn't queue nose to tail in a line of traffic, especially if you are last in line!

Of course if you have a stationary juggernaught behind you, it makes you safer because it's mass will absorb a lot of energy and there won't be a huge transfer of momentum.

And cars are a lot weaker against side impacts then front or rear. A sobering thought.

Even more sobering thought is that the human brain and body is far less able to survive side impacts than front impacts.

A dashcam isnt going to help with impacts from the rear or side, and proving the other driver had their lights off could be difficult.

I now have a dashcam, got it fitted when i got my windows fixed, I was surprised to find that its not distracting in the least, despite dropping down behind my mirror. I highly recommend them as I have lost count of the amount of idiots weaving all over the road on the motorways near me.

Is it wraparound after a set period of time? And what do you do with the images after you have captured it?

    Re: Unsafe drivers

according to the blurb it will overwrite once the card is full, its a 32Gb card recording at 1080p, so it will record a fair few hours. If a collision is detected then it automatically saves the data for the previous couple of minutes and prevents it from being overwritten - I havent tested this feature, and hopefully will never have to

Not done anything with the images yet, not even linked it to my PC. I will at some point just to mess with it, maybe if i get some footage of a plane crash or a biker somersaulting onto a car roof...

    Re: Unsafe drivers

You can get rear facing cams for rear impacts. If you have front and rear cams, you generally have enough info to establish fault in a side impact too (e.g. you can see who turned in front of who or failed to give way).

you thought you escaped did you :grr:

not sure how to respond to this to be honest.

are you saying theres loads of elderly aggressive drivers from southport?

yes theres lots of crashes about, they seem to be mainly from inattentive drivers, more than elderly ones.
theyre mostly, un-proportionately caused by BMWs or Mercedes.

this one, from today is one

most seem to be near the strange 20mph zones, a lot of roads are 20mph, the rest are 30mph, just makes people impatient going down the 20 zones, so they speed up too much going into the 30's.

as for aggressive elderly drivers. well I can only assumes they are also annoyed that shopmobility closed a year ago, so theyre having to drive everywhere instead of pootling about on mobility scooters.
and if you go on to say "well mobility scooter drivers are all aggressive in southport too", well then. then we will have serious words peterb my son, because I myself trained a lot of them

    back to topic...

I've been told, by a few sources, including an advanced police driving instructor and a few SAS bodyguards, that everybody on the roads is a plonker, absolutely everybody, no exceptions. everybody drives in a different manner than what you yourself do, so any action the other driver does is therefore unexpected.

just give everybody room, expect the unexpected and try not to annoy anyone. unless you are in an accident its best to just forget what incident just happened, because you may ever see the other car ever again. You'll just get worked up for no reason, which causes your driving to get worse, which causes you to get into more incidents.

    Had a cracker this morning.

Coming up to a junction today and this guy pulls out in front of me and I have to slam my brakes on.

I then overtook him as it was the start of a dual carriage way and HE gave ME the middle finger.

Like I was in the wrong!

My 5 year old in the car asked what they sign meant.

    I just burst out laughing

Or anticipate the possible unexpected? It might not happen, but anticipate what could, or worst case scenario. The car on the wrong side of the road after it carried out an unsafe overtaking manoeuvre. The child chasing a ball into the road?

On that topic, is road safety still taught to children now? Or is the onus put on the driver to take responsibility for that, coupled with 20mph limits because it's the easier option?

They are, although how well I don't know. I quite often see the primary schools near me walking class fulls of kids around clad in high visibility jackets showing them pedestrian crossings.

It's taught to children throughout their Primary School years. The Fireman visited our children recently with their truck and a crashed car. They demonstrated some of their equipment. One Junior's (7-11) activity involves a visit from a local caterer with one of their HGVs. The children climb up into the cabin and see just how little visibility the driver has of what is in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle.
