    Unsafe drivers

Dear Hexites, I am interested in knowing what to do
-when you come across an unsafe driver on the road . e.g. changing lanes on a 50mph dual carriageway without indicating
-when you suspect a driver does not have a license as their driving is not polished and something that a driver who had driving lessons would never do.
-when a driver without insurance hits your car

    1) See it all the time. Ignored
    2) Hard to say....need more detail
    3) Leave it all in the hands of your insurance company. They'll sort it out. You can also get protection for your NCB for that exact reason at many companies.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Thanks Phage. What details do I get from the uninsured driver? Photo of their license, car reg, anything else?

    Re: Unsafe drivers

The answers to the first 2 questions seem irrelevant as the third questions seems to be a question after the fact.

As Phage has said, leave it in the hands of your insurance company, make sure you have plenty of photographs, including reg plates, the scene around the cars after the incident and most importantly make sure you have reported it to the Police.

    Re: Unsafe drivers

A rather varied mix of questions!

On the second point, who are you to necessarily judge another's driving?

For any accident take as many details about the other party as possible. Even if that's just a description of the driver and all the car details.

    Re: Unsafe drivers

When confronted by the first hypothetical scenario I duly avoid them, check to make sure that it was definitely a Mercedes, Audi or BMW because people such as these pay a premium so that they don't have to do things like indicate and if it wasn't I hurl a relative amount of abuse based on the danger I was placed in by them.

In the second hypothetical scenario I try and cut people a little slack, because we all make silly mistakes and I'm not exactly a driving instructor myself either. Unless I have to follow them for a while and their behaviour is consistently erratic in which case I check for the manufacturer of the vehicle and apply the same logic as in hypothetical scenario number one.

(somewhere a BMW owners club is preparing to tar and feather me, I know)

In the third instance, as has been said, if you think you've been involved in an incident with another driver that's uninsured or possibly without a license take down all the details you can get out of them, get as many pictures as you can take at the scene (including some that give a good indication of the exact location it occured and road conditions at the time if possible) then get the Police and your insurer involved. You pay them because they "have a very special set of skills" and access to all of the information they need to sort things out for you without you having to go all vigilante on the situation

That's not to say that last year when I thought I'd been hit by exactly that kind of driver that I didn't chase his passenger on foot around a housing estate until I got the drivers name, phone number and home address but then I'm here to be big and stupid so other people don't have to

I just torment you standard BMW driver. Overtake on dual carriageways then go into 'lorry overtake mode'.

Guy, I've got some feathers, have you got any tar? And are you free tomorrow?

Hmmm I do love the smell of hot bitumen and burned goose down in the morning... You sir have a date!

Although I would like at least one sensitive are to avoid burns for putting Mercedes and Audi drivers higher up the list

TBH, this smacks a little of snobbery - I've seen plenty of licensed drivers do stupid things on the road.

    Been there, done that.

It took two and a half years before the Motor Insurance Bureau paid out. To my knowledge, the offender still doesn't have a licence, nevermind insurance, and he continues to drive a car.

    Re: Unsafe drivers

    1) Too many variables to make any judgements,

    2) Don't expect people to drive 'by the book', don't get wound up by drivers who don't - there are a lot of them, good and bad. Driving lessons or a licence, though causal to 'good' driving are not indicative of one's driving proficiency.

    3) Call the police immediately, this will make your life a lot easier. Take down as much identifying information as possible, uninsured drivers have little reason to hang around.

These three are indeed random hypothetical instances.
They are no way connected to any real world incident that I have faced, lol.

I have only recently started driving for the first time in my life. I never needed a car before as I work in the City and relax at home on weekends. But, with the Missus now around, things have changed in my life.

I have found myself using my horn on numerous occassions and thought I would find out how my other experienced Hexite drivers handle road behaviour of others.
Personally, for no.3, I would get a lipstick and write the words D I C K on the guy's windscreen and point an arrow towards the driver seat. Lipstick stains are not easy to get rid off from a windscreen from what I hear

    Re: Unsafe drivers

    Here's a tip.

    Install a dash cam.

It can come in handy to prove liability in accidents and possibly catch a hilarious moment worth a million views on Youtube.

But, it can also be a good learning tool.

When ever I have a near miss or 'moment' in the car or on the motorcycle, I review the footage and see how I could have handled that situation better, there's always something to learn.
